My stock Sony cd/radio seems to have expired for cd player so I need to explore a new unit, double din rail units seem to be common and readily available. I have the following thoughts - are the mountings a standard so unit out unit in? I was looking at some JVC units but I gather that there are adaptor plugs available for the unit to connect to early Toyota but are the speaker outputs included including auto aerial etc?

Not looking for anything heavy on spec the JVC units are available for about £70 to £100 at the low end which is more than ample for my needs, any other thoughts I need to consider?

I have this JVC one. Banana is a 2001 and it dropped straight in. Although I did buy it of another member, so not sure what you get in the box as standard.
Year and a half in and no probs. Use the usb all the time. Don't miss the scratched cd's at all.  s;-) ;-) s;-)

You'll need a wiring harness, £2-3 from eBay/Amazon. PC2-17-4 is the one you want.

Single DIN units are cheaper but then you're left with a gap to fill in the dash, not sure what solutions people have for that. It might be worth spending a little extra for something with Bluetooth, unless you're certain you'll never use it. I love being able to get into the car and have the stereo start automatically start playing whatever I was last listening to on my phone.

I will definitely be looking for a double dinrail, so no hassle with a gap. Now the strange thing is the Sony has started to work when the car interior is nice and warm, sounds like the laser head is sticking - maybe a clean is all thats needed. Anyone else encountered this sort of of issue
