Headlight Upgrade PFL>FL - Wiring changes?

I've got a set of Facelift headlights ready to go on to the car, and I'm looking at the wiring changes that need to be made. I'm particularly eager to retain 'normal' headlight function, that is the Dipped Beams stay on when you illuminate High Beams.

I've found this guide which appears to do what I want, but I was wondering if anyone could confirm, or share experiences. All my searching takes me to dead wiring diagrams and broken Spyderchat links...

It doesn't look like anyone with a UK car has found a way to maintain both dips and full beam when on full beam? It's either/or? Because our cars lack the mythical DRL2 relay.

The simple way of wiring it works, (Common ground, alternate switched Live for each bulb, either main beam or dipped projectors...)

But there must be a clever way!!

Ok, so I've done one light according to this information:

Quote from: "kanujunkie"who cares about how the lights are controlled though Steve, daytime running lights are something else, in this case we only need to know the connections to the bulbs and which bulb is which so that they can be split between the two lights in the post 03+ unit. So as Steve says the upper filament is the dipped beam and the lower then must be the high beam, so with that in mind just split the wires from pin2 of each bulb to the new connectors for the projector lights of the 03+ lights and the lower pin1 wires to the new connector for the main reflector on the 03+ lights. Finally you'll need to Tee out the earth side to each of the bulbs with new wireing.

so to cap

for the Left light unit.

splice the Red wire to the new projector light connector
and the Red wire with the green stripe goes to the high beam reflector
take a tee from the red wire with the yellow stripe to each of the lights

for the Right Light unit

splice the Red wire with a light blue stripe to the new projector light connector
and the Red wire with the black stripe goes to the high beam reflector
take a tee from the red wire with the yellow stripe to each of the lights

And I have the lights themselves working as intended.

BUT: No Blue 'high beam' blue warning light on the dash on main beams!!

I think this will be an MOT fail.

Many people must have done this upgrade, so what's the deal? And does anyone have a definitive way of keeping dipped beams on when mains are on as well?

That's the guide I used. All worked as promised. Never found a way to make the telltale on the dash work though  s:( :( s:(
I had rewired to dip and beam being separate before my MOT last year (blown relay, and I was in a hurry), so I don't know if that would be a fail or not...

The roof is down on my MR2,

So to confirm, when wired separate with dip/beam and no relay, did you have the dash tell tale light or not?

And then with the relay to get dip and beam on together, definitely no tell tale light?

When the dip and beam are wired separately, the telltale works.
Using the relay as shown, the telltale doesn't work.
Car electrics have always been a mystery to me. I've been wondering about using a diode between the lights, and whether that would work?

The dip and main are particularly weird, because the 3 input wires to the dual filament bulb do not work as expected.

OK, I've worked mine up with the split 'ground' cable and no other electronics, relays etc. I get:

Dip: projectors only

Main: Main reflectors AND projectors but no tell tale dash light.

WTF Toyota....

Yeah, tried these in the dark for the first time today. Something ain't right.

When in the dipped position I get Projectors only, and they're nice and bright.

When in the main beam postion I get Main beam reflectors + projectors, but everything goes dimmer. I'd guess that the voltage is getting halved across both lights, making them dimmer. And the dash tell tale light doesn't come on.

They work, but they need sorting.
