HI

Can anyone confirm for me that if i brought a 2zz gearbox could i put the gears into a 1zz box

I am looking into shorter ratios for the car, i would like

1zz 1st gear
1zz 2nd
2zz 3rd
2zz 4th
2zz 5th
1zz 6th
2zz final drive

all in a 1zz gearbox casing with LSD

is this even possible? any information would be much appreciated.

Cheers Tommy

Just swapping the final drive to the 2zz option and leaving the gears alone would give you 90% of the benefit without as much hassle.

The 6th gear swap seems relatively simple! I've seen a write up on a Lotus thread with a link to a Corolla forum.

@mattbrown82 started doing this.  He's in Stockport area so may be worth contacting him as not far from you.

The trouble is he's not swapping 6th gear.

I realise that, but for the hassle is it not simpler to just swap 6th? The difference between the ratios for 1st & 2nd must deliver very small benefits?

Which 2ZZ box? The (Celica) C60 or the (Corolla) C64? (.725 6th vs .815)

Final drive is 4.59:1 on both. Small final drive cog is part of mainshaft. In Australia neither have LSD. To change any of that, and/or first and second, I think you have to split the box. Good idea to renew synchro on second and third while at it, as they are usually the first things to fail.

Why not just use a Celica box with an MWR shifter shaft?  m https://monkeywrenchracing.com/product/ ... rix-trans/ m

Thanks for the input lads

seems like just swapping the final drive and 6th might be the one of the easiest solutions, or using the shifter shaft on a celica box but i would still have to put my LSD in that gearbox but that seems like good solution, thanks alan  s:) :) s:)

ideally i would like the 2zz internals with 1zz 6th and lsd in a 1zz casing, i found mattbrowns thread and he was asking the same questions and people seemed to think it is possible

either way it looks like im going to have to split the boxes, how difficult is it to fit a 2zz final drive?

I'm confused. You want to retain the current 1zz 6th? Either:

1. Put the 2zz final drive into a 1zz gearbox. You only then miss out on the 2zz 3, 4 and 5 but as said, this will be minimal anyway.

2. Alternatively do a 6th gear swap on a 2zz box, but then you get 2zz 1st and 2nd which you suggested you didn't want.

Which is easier?

Also, which components do you have already? It sounds like you have a 1zz 'box but not a 2zz 'box, so isn't the first option better? You then only need to buy a 2zz diff.

HI Iamcote

ideally i would like to retain the 1zz 6th for road use but not essential.

its looking like the final drive out a 2zz into a 1zz box is the easiest solution.

i could do a 6th gear swap on a 2zz box but would also need to swap the LSD and get a reverse block out and change the shifter etc

the list on the first post would be my ideal solution but not set in stone.

by the sounds of the response from everyone it seems i can do any number of variants i.e 2zz internals in a 1zz casing with a 1zz 6th etc etc

i have a 1zz 6 speed box with LSD so the cheapest and easiest solution is do a final drive swap.

so im going to way up my options and see what me and my buddy are willing to spend and if i can find someone willing to do the work as im no gearbox expert and don't really have the confidence to do it.

either way the gear ratios on a 1zz box are to long for our track car im hitting 95 in 3rd and 120 in 4th so something needs to be done for our car.

i just feel a shorter ratio with a lightened fly wheel will make the car come alive the engine is good just need the box to match

Yes, I reckon you're right with that plan.

Just going from 1zz to 2zz final drive on a 1zz 'box will reduce your gearing ratios by about 13% which is pretty helpful. You could always use smaller diameter tyres eg use a lower profile rear tyre, if you wanted a bit more. That would lower your centre of gravity too so you'd get a bit more cornering grip.

yeah  a 13% reduction overall will be a big difference, means ill be looking more like 82 in 3rd and 105 in 4th which would make a massive difference in performance for us

like you say for all the hassle of swapping gears over the final drive swap seems like you get 90% of the benefits at minimal cost

yeah we run low profile tyre etc so not much to gain really in that area, we could go to a 15inch rear wheel but i like the look of staggered wheel setup, and we compensate by making the setup square with tyre sizes.

so all in all it looks like a final drive swap is the one to go for, just need to find someone to do it  s:) :) s:)

Good luck, maybe try it yourself????

yeah have been doing some reading on the subject and it looks fairly straight forwards in terms of fitting the final drive its just pre loading the bearings and shimming lsd etc im not confident in which from what i have read can cause gearbox failure if not done correctly.

this is not something im desperate to do i mean the car is great on the raod and track im just always after the next gain, but this is the next major job on the list for us so the process is starting and probably gonna buy a 2zz box soon and go from there

About a month ago I took a spare 2zz c64 gearbox and transplanted the ratios 1-5 into an mr2 c60 gearbox keeping the long 6th. I stripped down the shafts and fitted new bearings and synchros (try amayama.com for the parts). The output shaft has the final drive small gear machined into it so although its easy to swap the large final drive from the non-lsd to lsd diff you need the outputshaft from the c64 to match/mesh. The reason I rebuilt it this way was that the gearbox has only done 39k so I didnt need to reset the diff preload, the rest of the strip and rebuild it just basic mechanics but does need a large hydraulic shop press and good pullers to get the gears off without damage ( especially 6th which has to be pulled at the same time as a large bearing so double the force!) I used a german kukko triple leg puller which worked well but there are hydraulic pullers available too.

Why not upgrade to some Jubu gears for 3rd and 4th whilst you are rebuilding it all for longevity and a slight change in ratio?

Seems like UK uses C64 in both Corolla 2ZZ and Celica 2ZZ?

And your 6 speed MR2 uses a C66?
