So a quick glance at a mr2 buying guide says mr2 FL are better and don't have stuck oil ring issue.

Yet people still report the issue ?

Anyone seen the later piston set up in say a 04 plate I'd love to see if it's different. I have seen pictures of the new piston with 4 holes but when did they actually alter to them ?

I'll be dismantling a late 04 in a couple of weeks.  I'll take some pics. It's an oil burner btw.

Interestingly, it doesn't mention the revised oil rings in 2006. It was written in 2004, and revised in late 2006.
I don't think it became "common knowledge" about the oil control rings until later.
But this is the salient point
Quote2002 - Addition of improved Oil Control Rings fitted to the Pistons.
I believe this actually came in just before the FL, hence why it's generally accepted that the FL engine is slightly more reliable on that front.

However, you'll find a lot of people here will say - doesn't matter if it's PFL, FL or even the post 2006 engine. If it's not been properly serviced and looked after, it'll likely be an oil burner at some point.

According to Matt Performance the 2002 oil control rings helped but didn't completely solve the problem, so the revised pistons with more holes were then introduced in 2006ish.
Silver 2004 MR2 -  Unmodified but very shiny.

I have taken the pistons out of the 04 engine.  The oil control rings are gummy but NOT stuck.  Bores very glazed and bad valve seals in the head.  Piston ring gap over tolerance.  Better with new ring.
This engine was using oil and the oil was going black, so I put it down more to valve seals than to gummed up rings.

That's a bit of a surprise to me. They're not all the same then [emoji849]What do you put the ring clearance down to? Ring wear or bore wear?

Ring wear and glazing as far as the bores are concerned.  Exhaust valve seals buggered.

Edit:  This engine had been Forte flushed.  It is far and away the cleanest 1ZZ I've opened up.

Also.  I've taken the oil control rings off the old pistons.  Judging by the amount of build-up of muck behind them, they weren't doing their job.

Had my engine rebuilt by Matt performance in May 2014 with new pistons and he commented that they were a modified unit yet again?
Ongoing story then!

Also cap weir mentioned the fl had revised ecu maps with less aggressive ignition advance and richer cruise/part throttle mapping, maybe to prevent issues
