Question about the fog light switch on my 2005 Spyder

Hello, Folks!

Just to introduce myself to start (this being my first post), I'm Raymond Fast from Dallas, Georgia. (That's right, there's another, much smaller Dallas! LOL) I have a 1986 MR2 NA that I started rebuilding/restoring/customizing some years back ... then I got married and took on the day-to-day responsibilities associated with a home and family. The MK1 has been sitting in the driveway (partially disassembled and virtually untouched) ever since. When my daily driver (a '91 Corolla with 430+k miles) started to need some major work this spring, my wife bought me a 2005 MR2 Spyder (5-speed) which I have been driving and loving!

Last weekend, I was thumbing through the owner's manual to see if there was anything I'd missed over the past few months regarding the instruments and controls, and I came across the fog light switch. That's the one on the far right hand side of the instrument panel, just above the door and window lock switches. I hadn't really paid any attention to it before, so I decided I'd try to figure out what it does - and it doesn't seem to do anything. My car has small, round lights down near the bottom in the front air dam that are controlled by the headlamp switch. Are these the fog lights that are supposed to be associated with that switch? Or is that switch supposed to be associated with something else (perhaps an option I don't have). Regardless of the position of the headlamp switch, the position of fog light switch has no affect on any of the lights (as far as I can tell).

Can anyone offer me some clues about this mysterious fog light switch?

Thanks!
Ray

Welcome Ray!
That switch should indeed control the fog lights at the bottom. I wonder how yours are wired up...

Do they come on with the main lights?
Mind, they don't come on unless the main lights are on I believe.

So, lights on (dim or bright) + fog button = fogs
Lights off + fog button = no lights or fogs

Also a bit confused about it being a 2005 but 5 speed. Is it a stick or an SMT transmission?

Could Ray be talking about the rear fog light??  Just a thought....

Wasn't that only on the MR-S?

I don't believe the US officially got the 6 speed box at all. [edit] They got the 6 speed SMT but only ever the 5 speed manual [/edit]

Just to correct my gaff, the switch in question is actually on the far left (not right), which everyone seemed to pick up on.

Those lights come on any time the headlights are on (high beam or low beam) and they go off when the lights are turned off. Each case is regardless of the fog light switch position.

It's a 2005 with a 5-speed manual transmission.

Rear fog lights?

Well I'll be damned... Learned something new. A 2005 with a 5 speed  s:) :) s:)

Don't suppose you have  picture of the front? Seems like some odd wiring

In the UK,  we are required to have a 'high intensity' rear light.  It's as bright as a brake light and for use in fog and poor visibility.

I have two MK3 MR2s .  One is a Japanese MR-S, which had to have one fitted, as it did not come with one, and a 'Roadster' (UK model), which has one built into the rear light cluster.

This is all I have of the front ...

On my pre - FL the rear fog lights are switched by the left control stick ( arm ) when headlights are switched on, same as the Facelift -/ On the Face Lift - one click on the arm to get Parking lights and rear reds - then using your dash switch you will get Front spots!! ( Without engaging Headlights!! )

That's an educational picture.  The orange light on the side of the bumper doesn't exist over here.  The US spec is obviously different in the lighting department.  Great looking car, though.  As you can see we have a small light behind the front wheel arch.

Sounds like the switch is faulty and stuck on all the time (or has been shorted by previous owner).

Are DRL's a requirement where you are? Maybe it's set to use fogs as DRLs using a lower intensity. Grasping at straws now
