Hi to everyone, what a great forum this is, I have already sorted out so many problems and questions. My apologies if this is ld ground but as a MR2 wet boy ( I only had her 5 days ) I am not sure what oil to use. I have searched for threads on this but it all seems a bit subjective. I have always preferred fully synthetic oil as I have always had sporty cars. Is synthetic oil ok in the 2 and if so what do you recommend. Car has done 33k miles, any help will be much appreciated   s:? :? s:?

That's because it is. There is no definitive best oil. Redline oils might be a good candidate though, if you don't mind the cost  s;) ;) s;)
Sure you can live without 500hp, but it\'s languishing.

Thanks Tem, not sure I have seen Redline in the Uk, I will check with my local supplier. Mobil 1 is what I have used in the past and that seems quite expensive. Guess you get what you pay for. For the amount of fun and pleasure the 2 gives giving her the best oil is the least I can do   s:) :) s:)

Now don't get me wrong, Mobil 1 is perfectly good for the engine, I'm using it myself  s8) 8) s8)  But I wouldn't call it the best. Chances are that the engine won't notice the difference between the best and any good oil though.

Over here Mobil 1 is about 40e/4l, while Redline oils are about 70e/gallon (=3.8l).

I think the only definitive answer is new oil is best!

Generally I think it is better to do more frequent oil changes than to use any particular oil, fully synthetic oils generally have the advantage of longer life - but if your changing every 12 months at most anyway, there is arguably no benefit.

Main reason we leave engine oil in for longer seems to be we get ripped off for servicing, when I used to service my own cars, I always did 3k oil changes, and didn't worry too much about the type of oil I used. (ie any branded 10/40).

What you get is what you pay for - hmmmm that can be true and most oils out there are very good - but I think you will find the majority of money you actually pay (£30 for 4ltr of Mobile 1) is in fact profit Halfords or the suppliers till.

The actual cost is in reality about £7, the rest is all added cost !

Shell Helix - Toyota Delaer price £40 / Direct from a garage - no profit £7 ! Hmmmmm nice difference.....

You must mean those 200l barrels, not 4l plastic cases? They are very cheap per liter over here as well...

And obviously you are paying for all their advertising as well  s8) 8) s8)

You are correct - I have a contact should we say and it just shows how much we pay on top of the real price of oil, obviously this option isn't open to everyone, but it's worth knowing that when you ask for your 10% or so off, they can really do a hell of a lot better !

Hi Mark,

Unfortunately not, they have a deal with Shell for the Garage (Major Manufacturer) and it's only cos my I'm cheeky that I get the oil for actually what it costs them.

So unfortunatly I can't do a group buy on Oil unfortunately, don't think my dad would be too pleased with the service department profits!

But needless to say, armed with this information, you should be able to negotiate some serious discount on your oil from the dealer next time (well at least your service oil!)

Cheers
