Matching colours when painting.

How difficult is it to match the colour to the rest of the car when painting?

I've got a hardtop that needs doing. I've got a gun and have painted before, but I don't want the top to end up a slightly different shade to the rest of the car.

Obviously I can get colour matched paint, but how well does it actually match the car when taking into account fade due to UV?

I guess you could always blend by painting the top section of the two rear quarters and the engine cover with the new paint to match the hood

I've used colour matched paint many times and from different shops and they've all been spot on, no matter what the condition of the paint was.

If the paint is faded badly and noticable, then I would polish it and stuff to bring out the correct colour, before getting it colour matched... Even if the roof ends up being a shade off, I doubt it would be noticable on a curved surface.

If you look at most hard tops, the colour is more often than not slightly off, mainly beacuse the Hardtop sees less sun than the rest of the car

The roof is plastic also and you'll never get the same colour finish on plastic as you would the surrounding metal so don't be too heartbroken if you can't get an exact match.

An alternative is to paint the hardtop a contrasting colour

Or cover it with vinyl and confuse people with the big rear window!

Indeed.  In fact, if most people take a close look at their bumpers, they are probably a slightly different colour to the nearby body panels.  Some colours are more prone to these kinds of differences than others.

How good are colour matched paints from a proper supplier then?

I've only used aerosols before and both times they were well off.

I've only got the facilities to paint cellulose, not 2k. I imagine the car will be painted in some form of 2 part paint from the factory.

If you are coming to Ding Day then you can speak to the paint guy there for expert advice!

The best move would obviously be just sell the hard top!
