Hi,

I just bought a Unichip (thanks again @ktmrider) but I have a couple of question:

- it says the second mapping is to be used with premium petrol however the octane value is different between USA an UK so does that mean I need to use 95 or 97 unleaded? Apparently the 95 is a premium regarding the USA specs...

- can I still install it with the mapping currently on (as far as i know the dastek base) even if I have a few mods or should I want until I take the car for mapping?

Thank you.

Hi Gaetan, good to see you have already taken delivery.

You might want to PM Kaveney, as he was the last person to use it.

You could also check out his reader's ride might be a few clues in there, I know he was running a non stock manifold (toyosports or hamish etc.)

I tend to put 97 or 98 octane in a stock MR2 anyway. I know it's probably overkill, but they also come with an additive pack to help keep your injectors clean etc. Definitely better than just running on supermarket crap.  :)

Thank you!

I will have a look at Kaveney reader's ride to see if I can find information! If not I will send him a PM!

USA fuel rating is different to ours they use PON not RON like we do for the octane, so as a rough guide USA premium is 93 Pon which is pretty much same as our UK 98 Ron like vpower etc, the USA normal ul is 91 which is like UK 95, there is more to it than that but hopefully that helps :D

Make way more sense than what I was able to find online lol

Thanks for sharing mate ;)

Bit of help needed after installing the Unichip...

The car starts but has issues to get a proper idle. It's the same both both mapping but the car does run and seems to be a bit more torquy.

I made a video when the car is hot showing the idle

Note that the car had the issue randomly before the unichip but not that much (variable between 800 and 500 rpms)

I need to clean the maf as I haven't done it since last year.

Of course the mapping is not for the setup yet but I don't think it would do that much but maybe I'm wrong...

Any idea what could cause this issue?

Gatouzze

So it tested the car longer today and the engine light turned on which I tested with my reader and the results are P0172 and P0175.

After checking online, system too rich bank I and II.

I have cleaned the error and changed back to map A see if there is a difference.

Can the system being too rich cause the idling issue?

Gatouzze

After driving for 20 minutes this morning with the map A, the CEL showed up and, after checking, the error are the same: P0172 and P0175...

I will disconnect the Unichip for now as long as I cannot take it for mapping.

I did not have any issue before installing the Unichip though... I have disconnect the Unichip to check when returning home if still get the same issue without and I will change back to the stock air box/filter to check if it helps ;)

Toyota ecu is  a lot more clever. Piggyback just disrupts signals. I'd add the stock airbox, reset the ecu and see if that helps.

I will try that in a couple of weeks as I am not here this weekend...

So what would be the point of the Unichip if it does not allow custom mods and does not change the ECU specs?

Nvy

My car did this on stock ecu when the dumbasses were trying to install BMC CDA with a silicon joint. I told them its not gonna work but they insisted on trying.. So it could be your intake.

The unichip definitely allows for mods. It allows you to modify the maps and calibrations to make best use of your mods.

But therein lies the key; you need to "tell" the Unichip that you've made a mod to expect different parameters. In the case of the intake, it'll just be a case removing about 10% or so to the MAF output across the range.

It seems to be over reading the airflow and dumping fuel in, then freaking out about overfueling.

That makes sense! I will test with the stock airbox soon and will update the post ;)

Eventually I will put back the AEM when mapping the Unichip :)

Gatouzze

@shnazzle I changed the airbox yesterday and after driving a few miles the engine light was on... I checked the fault and still P0172 and P0175 so the Unichip provides way too much fuel for either the stock airbox or the AEM...

I will try again when going home after work but the result will be more likely the same...

I am leaving the stock airbox for now until I have wrapped the AEM with heat-reflective tape and I will install everything back when mapping the Unichip but I need to find a sport catalytic converter first...

I had a unichip on my sp240 turbo and it threw a code every 200 miles.
It didn't seem to effect performance I just reset it using torque pro.
I'm not a piggyback fan tbh after using the unichip on my turbo and a det3 on my V6 I really feel a full standalone is the best way forward.

I hope a mapping of the Unichip will stop the code but I am more concerned about the idling not being stable...

I also think going full standalone is the best but spending roughly 1k for just exhaust and intake mods is a bit too much for me ^^"

I'm sure @shnazzle and others will shoot me down but the hassle that a piggyback brings just isn't worth it for induction and exhaust mods.
Look @Bernie or @tommyzoom99 and they mods they've done to their NA setups they've gained 50hp. How much is and exhaust and air filter alone going to get you?

Nope. No shooting here.

I've just removed my piggyback and yes my fuel trims are around 15 but that's expected for how much better my engine breathes now.
Key here is MAF. You change the intake, you've rendered the stock ECU blind of its primary parameter for fueling. Then it turns into a fix-on-fail scenario where it uses o2 sensors and fuel trims. But, always delayed as your o2 sensors are slow and MAF is instant.
It's an ongoing battle.
The only way with a piggyback on MAF is to make 100% sure your MAF calibration is spot on for any intake changes you make.

So,again, as per above. My piggyback is off and the car is now having to dump in fuel bevause its taking in far more air than it's measuring. Enter a piggyback with even more changes to fueling and you've got yourself some error codes

@1979scotte and @shnazzle do you guys reckon I should just remove the Unichip and leave the car only with the few mods I have without mapping or anything?

It's an all or nothing.

Put it in, put your mods on and get it mapped. Realising that all you'll get out of it is some better AFRs and a few hp.
Or take it out

If you want to stay NA and want more power save for a 2zz swap.
Financially it's the most economical and reliable solution.
Turbo 1zz offers way more power and torque but is a different animal.
Or you could do something really stupid like a supercharged V6. It's so stupid I actually did it. DOH!

For me piggyback is too much hassle for too little gain. Return to stock or really go for it. No halfway house.
