Hi, I'm fitting a new rocker cover gasket, but it keeps springing out of the rocker cover. Should I be using some sort of adhesive to hold it in place while I refit the cover to the engine? Many thanks

I've seen this before...when we were doing his valve buckets, Househead had a blue one that didn't quite fit.  We persevered with it, but it leaked.  It should sit where it's put without any help.

I'd get one from a different supplier.

This is a blue one. Came from a reputable supplier in the UK so I'm a bit surprised it is causing problems.

Carolyn

We were surprised too.  But those blue ones are trouble.

Since the injector rubbers are rather specific, I ordered the lot from Toyota when I took the cover off and fitted yellow injectors, rather than risk agravation and having to redo it to save some €.

My experiences with aftermarket exhaust manifold gaskets (on various cars) are such that I dont risk those anymore either.

I am sorry to read about your trouble Phil.

Go with Mr T. They are no more expensive than the non genuine items.

Should sit in and stay.

Just reading this after unpacking my new (blue gasket) I was looking forward to doing this job but now I'm thinking its going to be trouble. Did you get yours on in the end?

Buy a Toyota one perfect fit, im just in process of doing my valve stem seals so have valve cover off and old seal is very hard, probably original 105k/15 years old!, new toyota one from GT4play is much softer and fits in perfectly :D

As far as I can see. The Mr T gaskets are no more expensive than whatever else is out there.
Might as well have the Mr T.

Yes I did get the gasket on in the end. I've done a few miles and it seems fine. The gasket kept springing out of the rocker cover, so in the end I carefully cleaned out the groove in the rocker cover, removing all oil, got it nice and dry, then applied a few drops of silicon gasket in the groove, on the corners where the gasket was springing out. I then fitted the gasket to the cover and used plastic clothes pegs to hold it in place for about 40 mins. Removed the pegs and the gasket remained in place, so I refitted the rocker cover to the engine and all seems good. Remember to put a bit of silicon gasket where the engine block has a join where it meets the timing chain end. Worked for me.

I have to compliment you on your perseverance, but you really should not have had to go to those lengths!  I still say - the blue ones are trouble.

I've just ordered the Mr T gasket as Jason recommended and I'm going to try and send the blue on back.

Sorry to sound thick, I did pm PhilzMR2 but didn't get a reply. When you say blue, are you meaning the colour here or is that the name of the supplier?

Sorry I didn't get your PM. Yes it's blue in colour. The one that came off was black and had more of a T shaped cross section. It slotted better into the cover but was leaking badly. I've no idea if it was a proper Toyota one or not. It was fitted by a garage sometime ago.

Chilli Girl

Sent message on 25th April at 7pm, it's in my sent items. Anyway, it doesn't matter, thanks for yr reply. ;D

I concur that the blue ones are to be treated with suspicion. I got one and we had to stretch it a little to make it fit correctly. After a few days I noticed it was leaking. Replaced it with an official Toyota black one.

I have actually since replaced it again, this time with a non-OEM black one from eurocarparts. So far, so good.
