It’s there for a reason

It would be interesting in seeing if you drop water onto the upper central area very much like where the break light wire feed lets water in and contrast it with the other version. I wonder if the water falls differently.

It does:
The version without the lips only keeps the coils free and water runs off all four sides.
The ribbed one keeps the cable entry and the injector side free from run off.

Important? Dunno. It ís no doubt better at the job but;
If you have the drip tray under the vents in the lid, it will not matter much if anything.
If you don´t, having ány cover beats not having one.
The ribs are less nice looking still imo and will make a wrap even more of a pita than it already is.

For me water gets in from the break light wire grommet.

It seems so but the weather is so good recently I do not have a good opportunity to test my theory.

With the lid closed the tray has quite a steep angle to the rear. Should not be any water going towards the grommet untill you open it, causing it run to thataway.
