So does that mean that tyres get checked against what manufacturers specify as original equipment? How does that get checked?
And then one day you find, ten years have got behind you ...

Yes.
They look at the numbers on the sidewall and then at the equivalence table. Simple:

ITV = MoT

Ply rating and speed index gets checked too.

I've read about Rainsports being good - you've gone up a size on the front and down a size on the rear, do you have the same profiles of 55 and 45 ?

I do wonder about going up or down in size and profile, can't imagine it making a huge difference when talking about 10mm or 5%.

195/50/15 fronts and 205/45/16 rears.

No dramas even on track in heavy rain.

I wouldn't go above 195 on the front for road use I thought it made the steering heavy.

I still recommend pfl wheels and tyre sizes I think the car is more fun with less rubber

Off topic a bit, but, totally differnt lines you were taking compared to the mazda, your lines were similar to mine (on my bike) the MX 4.9 were very wide, just down to the conditions or traits of the car ?

Just my inexperience mate. This was my first very wet track day and I just couldn't bring myself to use the mx5 lines as it just felt wrong.

Back at Oulton on the 18th and no doubt it will be wet, so this time I'm 100% using the wet lines as I reckon there's at least 2 seconds a lap to be had using the proper wet lines.

My car was clearly much quicker than the mx5 in a straight line but his experience made it a much more even contest.

We hired a Fiat 500 in Majorca in '67, the brakes became increasingly poor during the day and were almost non existent when we got back to the hire car place.
My first experience of mañana when the guy actually said it when I told him about the lack of brakes.
Times change! I worked with a Spanish (Cooperative ) engineering company for ten years and they could produce their bespoke product faster than any other company that I was aware of in over 40 years in that industry.
