Hello All,

I took my MR2 mk3 into a garage last week for a "visual" health check. There were a few problems identified no of which are too major but will need addressing. The main think was to replace the rocker cover gasket. I was quoted £350 for the job which i thought was a bit steep. I have looked online and the part is £30 and the job its self doesn't seem to much trouble has anyone else here attempted this themselves or had it done at a garage?

Many thanks

That is definitely a diy job and the garage are definitely endeavouring to rob you.
I have not needed to do this on this car but it is not a 5 hour job as would be indicated for £350.
There are how too's on here that include removing the cover.

I've done two cars, you'll need a socket set, and some RTV sealant. Some degreaser spray and a couple of rags probably not the worst idea to have to hand too. I have a smaller torque wrench but so long as you don't go stupidly tight you'll be fine with just a regular ratchet.

Nice and simple job, 2 hours tops if you took your time as a DIYer, could probably do one in under an hour.

Carolyn

Quite a simple job. Mind you the culprit for a lot of top-end oil leaks is the chain tensioner O ring.

Unfortunately the Toyota one is rubbish - as many members have discovered.

Send me a Personal Message, with your address and I'll send you one that WILL do the job.  FOC as a courtesy from the club.

There's also a 'How To' for the chain tensioner.

For £350, I would drive down from Leicester and do it for you.
Seriously having your pants down.
Where they sat on a horse with an eye mask and a pistol when they quoted you?

If there is one thing we hate on here, it's owners being robbed.

£350 to change a rocker cover gasket, were they supplying one inlaid in gold, as said, for a novice with basic tools and tube of sealant its 2-3 hours work, a competent mechanic will do it in a hour or so

Adventure before dementia 😁

£350 is absolutely bonkers.

I could do it in 30 minutes tops.

I'd stop using that garage 🤠

Thanks for all the replies and yes i will do it myself. It did notice however that that price was also to re do the sealant on the sump. Anyway i will do the gasket this weekend.

The next question is what gasket to get, all i hear is don't buy the cheap blue one it doesn't fit. Where do i buy a better grade one from?

Thanks

Toyota.
I got mine from the dealer parts dept and no more expensive than anywhere else.
You cannot view this attachment.

Part was 16.39 in June 19. Bound to have gone since then. But £30 seems a bit stiff.
Give Mr T a call or their own ebay shop.

I did wonder how much a gasket was from MrT and that price is better than some others on the www. Amongst them was Micks Garage who had this to say about why they may need replacing:

Due to the engine's high temperature when running, the gaskets can become brittle and weak over time. When this happens, leaks can develop. Fortunately, we keep a wide range of rocket cover gaskets in stock and they're usually pretty simple to change:

Maybe that's where @ Petrus gets his gaskets from!

Elring or Reinz on ebay are under £12 posted, or Club affiliate TCB will have a good brand, if not Toyota for less than Toyota-price.

For what it's worth you could get a new sump, new Toyota rocker gasket, tube of RTV, socket set from Halfords, full service kit from Toyota and still have change from £350 :)

Appreciate some of it is labour but sounds like you've a plan

Why, was the sump leaking.  A lot of times garages like to do unnecessary repairs to make money. If its not leaking leave it alone. The factory Toyota sealant is different than the stuff they sell at the dealer and its quiet expensive so it never leaks.
