I'm going to be doing an oil change on my MR2 in a couple of weeks time, in the past I've used a combination of either Miller's, Fuchs, Castor and one or two other 5W30 oils, never settling down to one make

I was planing on filling the engine up with Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S or Castrol EDGE Titanium 5W-30 LL Fully Synthetic Engine Oil (which ever my local motor factor has in stock) this time round

The other day I came across Liqui-Molly 5W30 synthetic oil (5W30 Synthetic Technology Engine Oil Special LL) and I was wondering if anyone has any opinions or experience of this Liqui-Molly oil in an MR2 roadster?

None.
When I had a turbo I used fuchs on a standard car any fully synthetic is good enough.
MR Ts own can be a good choice.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

@Mollydog

No experience of the molly 5/30.
I liked the fuchs supersynth. But have used other stuff.

May depend on your intended use. If going to rag it round a track. Then perhaps the pro S race. Is the stuff.
If as weekend joy machine, no need to spend that much.
I am of the opinion, better to change twice a year than once.
I can do 2 changes for the price of the pro S.

The standard spec is only semi synthetic. So any full synthetic will be above spec as it were.

I have used Liqui Moly 0w-40 before. It was good oil at least from my research. I went back to Castrol 0w-40 and now use Penzoil 0W-40 SRT oil. The Penzoil is basically Shell helix oil which you find in European markets. It is derived using  a new process from natural gas. It is currently the best technology in engine oil because it is very effective at cleaning up deposits left over from previous oils and has shown to have very low wear rates. It pretty much acts like an engine flush cleaning out the oil drain holes and ring packs over time which can actually reverse the aging effects of older engines. It can also dissolve occlusions caused by varnish that restrict oil pressure to the VVT circuit.

Thank you for this information Dev,  I see Penzoil 0W-40 SRT oil is available from the US (with high shipping price) do you know which blend of Shell oil is the equivalent to Penzoil 0W-40 SRT oil?

You don't have to use the SRT oil which is designed for the Dodge Hell Cat. I use it in my 2ZZ and it is overkill. I like it because it has high amounts of the tri nuclear moly. The most wearable item is the 2ZZ intake cam. With the 1ZZ it should not be an issue.

I believe the product in your market is the 5W-30 or 5w-40 Helix ultra which is the one with pure plus technology.  Shell has a patent on this technology and that is why it is regarded as being superior and I believe some of the other boutique brands will eventually use their base oil under license.

Another interesting to note is some racing teams like BMW and Ferrari are using a modified version of the pure plus technology to get an edge.

Thank you Dev, I'll put in an order for a can of 5W-30 Helix ultra

If they have it in the 0W-30 or 0W-40 I would get that. The 0W would be better flow at cold temps and just fine when hot.
They say most engine wear comes from cold start and having an oil with better base stocks is ideal.

I made the order (on eBay) on Sunday night and it arrived this morning

Now if it can be dry and not too cold this coming weekend I'll get on with an oil change for the MR2

I looked into what you bought. Its mostly a specific oil to meet a particular rating for certain Diesel and some gasoline vehicles for emissions. This will be fine but next time choose a non professional version of this oil. Specific oil like this generally is used so it doesn't produce particulate and that is why it has to be a certain spec oil. Being able to use it for Diesel also carries a more robust formulation that is not needed for our kind of engine.

Oil like this is overkill however having the pure plus technology is what you are buying it for as it can bring the engine back to near factory clean within a few change cycles. That is the major benefit with this technology over other current engine oils as it can quiet down engines, rejuvenate engine seals and increase the performance once the ring packs are clean and compression is restored.

I killed to birds with one stone this afternoon, as for a change it wasn't raining I made a start on the oil change

I have one of these car oil pumps to get out the oil so first thing was to get out as much oil with the pump before taking off the nappy and oil filter

Straight in to a large used oil container

https://youtu.be/7XZEwn7uwbo

Once the oil stopped coming out, I took the nappies off and took off the drain plug, no oil coming out and after a couple of minutes seeing there was no oil drips I refitted the drain plug and took off the old oil filter with a thing  made to get the filter off I bought from Aldi (£2.99)

Somewhere in the shed I have a flexie funnel but was getting dark by now so used this paper funnel I was given from Mr T, when I first bought the car they included a free service and with that service they handed me a litre of oil in a bag that also included these paper funnels, we kept in the car, came in handy this afternoon

After replacing the filter and checked the drain plug was on, I filled the engine with as near as dam it 3.5Lt - 3.7Lt of oil

After doing this I fitted the 02 sensor (info on another thread) then took the car out on our ring road a couple of times all seemed well, I'll check the dip stick in the morning it's too dark now
