Rusty break disks...

Hi all, it's been ages since I last posted for advice but here I am again...

Could you have a look at the pics and tell me if what you see is normal?  These disks (all 4) are only about 18 months old (the car is 2,5 years old; I own it since new) and the previous ones where replaced under warranty due to excessive rust.

The reason I am asking for your point of view is because a couple of months ago, when I asked for new replacements, Toyota Macclesfield suggested that this is normal.  During this time the problem has obviously got worse and I am thinking of giving warranty replacements one more shot.

What do you guys think?  Needless to say that the second set of alloys have bubbled as well...

I can't believe it. 18 month old discs and 30 month old car.

Everything looks as though the car has been standing up to its axles in a paddy field.

PLEASE somebody tell me its not normal!

Perhaps I should mention that the car is mainly locked in a closed garage since I use public transport on a daily basis...  Additionally, In 2,5 years it's covered 25,000 miles; so no excessive usage.

So, do you think they should be replaced under warranty?  I don't have a problem taking it with the Office of Fair Trading (or BBC's Watchdog, even) if Toyota still refuses replacements.

Toyota should replace those, I had mine replaced just the other week and they were only slightly worse than that.

I hope the replacement parts arent as prone to rusting as the originals otherwise it looks like they'll need changing rather regularly!

Any ideas how much that'd cost if not on the warranty?

IMHO, you just need to take the car for a blat along some of your favorite twisty roads and use the brakes a bit - the action of the pads should clean up the disks. You shouldn't get rusty 'rings' though as the pads should be sweeping the full width of the disk clean.

Note that rust and corrosion is a fact of life with iron brake disks. If you don't use the car that much it gives chance for rust to form across the disk and attack and pit the surface a little.

I did note that when I picked up my car that the dealer had replaced the disks, pads and wheels under warranty - and that the centre section of the new disks looked to have had some sort of spray-on zinc anti-rust coating - the area swept by the brake disks was not covered though.

FWIW though, the rear disks on my Mk1 MR2 looked like this after a few years too. If Mr T doesn't swap them for you, and you need new parts, give Brakes International a ring and see if they can do some new disks and pads - always replace both at the same time.

My brakes look identical to these. Exactly the same. The rust is creeping onto two of my calipers and I have recently had the wheels recoated.

I have no warranty from Toyota so am wondering what I can do with them?

My plan is to paint the calipers, paint the hub and outer rim of the disc. Once this has been sorted I hope the rust won't come back in a hurry. There are pictures on here somewhere of someone who has painted their discs.

Thanks for your replies guys.  Although taking the car out for a spin has cleaned up a bit of rust, it hasn't really made much difference.

just been to Mr.T and they're saying that they wont just replace discs anymore, they have to skim the discs first, anyone else had this story?

HI

My Mr2 has just passed its 3rd birthday. The disks and hubs on mine are still like new with no rust at all on any part.

I must admit my car is garaged all the time and has only done 11000 miles, mainly in the dry but I always clean around the hubs when I wash the car.

There is no way that your hubs should rust like that.

Anyone with rusty brakes ever driven during winter? They will rust just like that from the first sight of salt and the only way to prevent it is to keep the salt away. Paint is one of the things that does just that.

Sorry, couldn't work out how to put the images in the post!

These were swapped out of my girlfiend's MR2 this weekend.  The brake feel had been really bad - and I can see why!  Any idea what causes a disk to end up like this?  There didn't seem to be any problems with the calipers, evrything was moving freely.  As you can see, the outer surfaces weren't too bad but both inners were the same sorry state

Cheers

David

silverfox, you cant link those pictures like that as they're on a forum that needs a logon to be able to view them, to post the pictures on here, right click on the pictures wherever they may be, copy the location, then useing the Img button at the top of the post message body box enter that location, close the tag and submit

I have a login over there too (naturally, given my other car  s:) :) s:) ), so, David, I hope you don't mind, but I 'borrowed' those pics, and popped them up somewhere so that others can see them as well  s:) :) s:)

Those disks look awful! The inside especially, though I'm not sure what would cause damage that bad.. Overheating perhaps, or maybe a manufacturing fault - it looks like part of the disk surface has actually flaked away on the inside where it's rusted 'underneath' (rather like paint over a rust bubble on bodywork)..

Thanks Aaron

Yup, awful is what I thought!  Running very nicely on the new ones.  Just have to keep an eye on them and make sure they wear ok!

Mine don't look quite that bad but I'm thinking about getting aftermarket disks that won't rust.

My first guess would be brakes themselves. If they don't move freely, and they rarely do after driving on winter, things get stuck just a bit too much and the pad actually never touches the disc with any decent force. That's very common sight on older cars, but can happen within a year.

I know Silver said everything seemed to move nicely, but from what I've learned, you really can't judge that by moving parts with your hand. Most normal driving never really puts that much pressure on the rears anyway, so they should move without any effort to do anything. One good saltshower makes sure they won't  s:? :? s:?

These were the front disks however so should have been seeing plenty action ...even with only moderate driving.  Think the best thing I can do is run with the new disks for a month or so and then check that there is good wear on the inside.  ...Perhaps I'll have a look at the rears too!

The ones I put on are from speedways.co.uk.  Do these ones tend to be any better than the OEM ones for corrosion?

My delear has always refused to replace mine. The first time I complained they cleaned them up and painted the edge to make them look a little better. Have tried since with no joy  s:? :? s:?
