Does the EML go off automatically in these cars when the issue is solved or do they need to be reset by the code reader?

Depends on which code.
A few go immediately, some seem to go after 3 cycles (O2 sensors), some can be cleared by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and others like the airbag, need to be cleared using a code reader and not the cheap versions either but more advanced readers.

I would say most people would clear the code once they think they have fixed it by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes. Once you clear any codes this way, it can still take 10 miles of driving before the code would come back if you hadnt solved the problem so I would want to know if I had sorted the problem asap by clearing the code either with a code reader or by disconnecting the battery.

I've got a bluetooth reader which works on the airbag system but live just south of Milton Keynes so not super handy for you. I think there is a list of members on here who have readers and happy to help out.

If you have a smartphone the cost of the Torque Pro app & a bluetooth scanner is very cheap.

Bit of both I Believe. Not that, that helps much.

Got myself a code reader and its thrown P0141 which is the oxygen sensor. Is there only one of them? where is the best place to get one from?

There are three in Euro model cars:

Bank1 Sensor 1 In the exhaust manifold to your right.

Bank2 Sensor 1 In the exhaust manifold to your left.

Bank1 Sensor 2  At the exit of the main cat (connector to be found behind nearside tail light). This sensor has a longer wire going to it, than the other two.  Though you can buy a 'universa'l one that has a long wire, but you'll need to use your old connector and crimp the wires together.

Don't mess with anything other than Denso. Honest, buy any other brand, and you'll be buying a Denso in short order!

The post-cat sensor (the one in question) can be a pig to remove.  I cut the top off with an angle grinder (then you're committed!!), so I can get an impact socket on it, give it a good soaking with Plusgas, a good go with a plumber's torch and get a breaker bar on it while it's hot.  You'll need to get the car pretty high up on jack stands in order to get some room to work with a breaker bar.

EDIT:

That code is for the heater circuit, which will have little effect on the functioning of the car, but it will keep turning the EML on.  There is a bodge which involves the use of a resistor to mimic the heater circuit, but I don't recall the details.  Another member may have that knowledge.

My go to is sparkplugs.co.uk but have used Ebay or amazon. Depends on the day.

As per C above. +1 on the denso

Craigjm

The light has stayed off since I turned it off. If it comes on again I will get one and definitely go for the Denso
