Quick Question...

Hey, this is my first post as ive just brought an MR2, which I'm loving to bits.

Right my question is it only came with one key and imobilser, i really want to get another one but i hear it's really expensive.. Has anyone had to get another key done, so i can get an idea on what to do and the cost?!!

Did you get your car from a main dealer or a private sale?  I had the same problem when I purchased mine 2nd hand from a main dealer.

I just kicked up a fuss and they provided a new one for me, I was told that they cost over £100.

Mine was brought privately unfortunatly so i couldnt have that choice!

Did they lose the 2nd key then? It would worry me that possibly someone is walking around with a key that would open my car  s:shock: :shock: s:shock:  , unless you live miles away from where you bought it of course. Looks as though its going to have to be the main dealer then.  s:cry: :cry: s:cry:

luckily they lived miles away and the guy i brought it off was selling it to go travelling so he cant track me down! Im just so worried i might lose it...

i am in the same position, i have had my 2 since november last year, and have only had one key, and it terrifies me, as it costs about £1000.00 to sort out ECU, and immobliser, and all that gubbins if you loose youre key. so i have just bought one. £100.00  and i never ever loose my keys, but its just not worth the risk, and it plays on your  mind alot. just get it done. if you find a cheaper way let me know...

One of the guys on my team at work bought a Ford Focus with only one key. A week later he had lost it, much to our amusement. He phoned around a few places and in the end got a mobile key replacement service to come round and cut him a new one. Took them an hour and I think it cost him something like £400 for 3 new keys. That is quality Ford security.

Made me laugh though   s:D s:D .

Toyota dealer Denzil Evans of carmarthen will do you a new key with all the programming for alarm ,immob etc for £50 plus vat,they also do
a full service on the 2 for £120  s:D s:D    ,they changed my pads for free ,skimmed the discs ,painted the hubs and put a new full set of alloys again all for free ,

I had the same problem but I managed to find someone in the states selling blank transponder keys on e-bay, when he sends you the key it comes with 4 or 5 pages with various different methods of programming the car to accept the new transponder (these aren't remote central locking keys but standard transponder so at least you will have a spare and won't have to have the ECU reprogrammed of you lose the original).

I bought one for around £12 had it cut in my local locksmoth for £4.

Give me 10 minutes and I'll check my ebay and get you the contact details.

The guy I got the key from, his ebay username is "floodkeys" he doesn't seem to have any MR2 keys at the moment but I'm sure if you mail him he will be able to sort one out.

If you need the programming instructions let me know and I will post them.

I'be been meaning to post them on here for ages but haven't got round to it.

He also sent me instructions on how to program the remote central locking keys which Toyota told me that only they could do. So if you can find a blank one of those I have the info.

sure we've been through this before and the uk spec is different to the us spec and can only be programmed by Mr.T with a computer

Can't say if the remote central locking one works as I haven't tried it but if you are happy with just the transponder key (as I am coz I have an aftermarket alarm system that controlls the locking) they work fine, I'm currently using one, they aren't genuine toyota parts they are called ilco.

Are you sure? Cause that works for sure in a european Corolla, which I assume has pretty much the same system than our '2  s:? :? s:?

(we did go through the fact that the remote is different in US/EU)
