A Wrapped Cat is a Happy Cat

So it was MOT time again today and a pass with no advisories.  ;D

The only thing I was concerned about was the emissions check.  Last year just prior to the MOT I fitted a new Cat (EEC) and then I started getting P0420 codes.  Went through checking the whole routine of sensors, leaks, cleaning the throttle body etc etc.  Anyway decided on a pre MOT emissions check at our local garage and it passed, at a push.  To be fair the guys there are pretty good and know what is needed to get the best result.

I still occasionally get a P0420, so before the test this year I decided to wrap the cat, to keep the heat in and to give it a better chance.  Anyway long and short is that the emission results were better, in particular the natural idle CO which was right on the limit at 0.30 % last year and down to 0.19% this year, with 1 rpm difference between the checks

So I'd say wrap a new aftermarket cat and retain the nappies (still got mine to put back).

I have a Cats2U type approved cat and it is wrapped.  It always aces emissions testing.

When you think about it, the OEM cat comes with heat shields that amount to a thick wrap.

Exactly my thoughts, I would have transferred the heat shields from the OEM but they wouldn't fit.

If you have no shielding and run without nappies there will be significant difference in heat loss.
