What is the container to the right of the Brake Fluid Resevoir in this picture?

The Rubber cap says it is break fluid, but there is no way the cap could take any presure even though it appears to have a pressure relief valve in it. Mine is filled to just over Max. It is leaking very slightly just enough to make it a bit sticky.

In the last two weeks I have been to Cornwall and to the Lake District so i've been up and down some very steep hills, working the brakes hard. Is it some kind of expansion tank for the brakes?

That is the clutch reservoir, it is connected directly to the clutch pedal through the firewal

Ah, I think I know what happened. Due to some spectacularly bad driving on my part, trying to cross the very fast, very busy A30 from a standing start up a slight incline I managed to slip the clutch and cross the road on the rev limiter with the clutch producing a really bad stink. I thought i'd killed it as it didnt bite properly for the rest of the day, next day it was fine. What I probably did was super heat the fluid causing it to expand to out of the resevoir. Make sense?

If that is the case, keep an eye on your clutch. I did exactly the same thing as you, and when I took the clutch out (for replacement in preparation for my turbo), it was completely fried.   s:( :( s:(

Can't realy see the heat transmitting from a thrust bearing up a fork arm then along a pistion rod into a slave cylinder along a steel pipe up a flexi hose to another bit of steel pipe to a master cylinder, tbh.  s:wink:  s:wink:

You probably had the equivalant of brake fade on your clutch plate, still wouldn't have done it a lot of good though  s:( :( s:(

Couple of things:

If you've had brake fluid leaking - wash it all down, it's highly corrosive and will strip the paint off in no time, which is nice..

And secondly - there's never any pressure in either of the reservoirs AFAIK, all the pressure stays in the master cylinders  s:) :) s:)

But, anyhow, as people have said.. that's the clutch reservoir.

Fair enough then sounds like it probably leaked because it was overfilled. One of the passes in the lake district was marked up as 25% hill so it might have had a chance to trickle out then, it sure felt pretty steep. Or probably more likely under heavy braking.
I've given everything a good wipe down, no damaged done. It had only managed to leak onto the side of the resevoir and the outside of the bin.

Thanks everyone.  Rich.
