Phoned a company today to see about getting my windows tinted, I was advised that they could do the back one but it would be ilegal to do the front 2 but they would do it if I wanted.

Anyone point me in the right direction here????

The front side windows must let a minimum of 70% light through, and the windscreen 75%.

There is a lot of conflicting advice about this kicking around, but the sides need to let 70% of light through (don't forget they're already tinted a bit)

The official police answer is hilarious...."In the windscreens (including rear windscreen) and front side windows of motor vehicles first used after 1st April 1985 there must be a minimum of 75% of light allowed through the window (for vehicles first used before 1/04/85 min of 70%). The windows that are exempted from this are any windows, which the driver when sat in the driving seat is unable at any time to see any part of the road on which the vehicle is situated whether proceeding or waiting. The only exempt windows would be then, the rear windows on both sides."

Hmmm mumbo jumbo talk!!  Remember if they are too dark you can get stopped and made to peel it off at the side of the road...an expensive mistake if its too dark on the side windows.  And they use a lux meter to test it, not just their judgement!

We had a clampdown 18 months ago after some drive-by-nasty-goings-ons. It wasn't so much to make people aware of the legal requirements - it was more on the grounds of Police safety when approaching a tinted-out car. And quite right too IMHO.

If you want an honest and personal opinion, I think it's extraordinarily dangerous to have the glass on our cars tinted. There's precious little space to see through anyway, and I certainly wouldn't want anything else to restrict my view of the outside world even more. Styling doesn't even come into it: It's a safety thing first and foremost for me.

Pretty much the same reason why you'll never find a sunstrip on my car.   s:wink:  s:wink:
