Clunk clunk clunk (sounds expensive)

So just started the car after it had been sat overnight and got horrendous clunk clunk clunk sound from the engine for about twenty seconds or so before resuming its normal purring.    s:shock:  s:shock:

I've checked the oil level and its ok but very wary about driving it now - but got to get home from work now so its a bit crucial!

Any ideas?

Currently offering odds of 10/1 on getting home without having to join the rac if anyone wants a flutter??  s:wink:  s:wink:

Hard to diagnose noises from posts  s:? :? s:?  , but if it was a loud bucket of nuts-style clatter rather than a clunk I had this a couple of months ago.

Like you, oil was OK and the car hadn't been standing idle for more than 12 hours. The noise went away after a panic shutdown and a re-start.

The local mechanic's theory was oil starvation of a camshaft bearing which he reckoned can happen sometimes  s:shock:  s:shock:

Anyhoo, to play safe I flushed and changed the oil and filter. It was due a change anyway, so maybe it had started to deteriorate a bit?

Only happened once - scared me silly - but never recurred and no signs of damage thats affecting performance/consumption.

I reckon you'll get home fine - pick up some Wynn's engine flush on the way  s:wink:  s:wink:

was this happening on turning the key or when you moved the car, more details are needed to point a finger at a problem

I took this to be a start-up engine problem rather than a moving along one. If the latter, ignore everything I just said  s:oops:  s:oops:

Thanks for the speedy responses!

Well the good news is I made it home (clenched all the way mind!)
It was after the engine started (starter motor off) and didn't happen again when I restarted to go home. It's due a service anyways (just got some quotes for 40k service ~300 squiddlers!   s:shock:  s:shock:   but that's a whole different thread!) so I'm hoping it will just go away and not come back - ever the optimist!

i've just paid £269 for the 40k but some got it nearer the £110 mark, do a search and you'll find it  s:wink:  s:wink:

It might have just been pinking. If you car is due a service then it probably has dirty sensors which could cause this.

Pinking is very loud on these engines and sounds a bit like a crunched gear

Hmmmm.....I have had this and had similar responses. As already said, I posted about this before. Its happened to me twice now and its not been detrimental to the engine as far as I can tell and so far, no damage and engine is fine. Still no clear answers as to what it is, but so far, I have left it alone and its been Ok. I MIGHT mention it at next service if it happens again.
