If it's the 'clonk.... clonk' noise as you drive forward & backward (rather than the 'grindgrind' as you actually turn the steering wheel) then yep, perfectly normal (depending on tyres, some peoples don't do it, some do)

QuoteI've never known anything like it on any other car in 35 years of driving.

It's down to a combination of the front steering geometry (quite aggressively set) and having very very little weight over the front wheels (due to lack of an engine, mainly  s:) :) s:) )
I find it strange that i have never had it once in nearly three years of ownership and then without fail it has done it everytime I reverese and the car is cold over the last week. Something has changed so I can only surmise its the tyre wear and temp combo  s:? :? s:?

I think you're right.  Mine had started to 'skip' slightly during low speed maneouvres - no clonking - but you could feel the fronts doing odd things.  New tyres at lunchtime - skipping and other oddities have now stopped.  Definitely tyre wear has an effect on this.

Yep - OK, I admit, I forgot to mention tyres in my.. no, wait, I did mention tyres  s:P :P s:P

They'll have a greater propensity for it when the tread is lower (the tread blocks find it harder to move around to even out the loading as they are shorter), and the rubber harder (colder weather, tyres going off due to age)..

Wassa matter?  My *empirical evidence* not good enough for you then?   s:P :P s:P

Of course, if I had bothered to read all the posts on this thread, I could have saved the typing and the bandwidth  :-) :-) :-)

Yeah, the one where it feels like the front wheels are pointing totally different directions, and the car's not quite sure which way to go!

The factory-fitted Yokos, with 2.3k miles on them.

So, just accept that that's the way it is, and that it doesn't do any harm?

The weather connection is interesting - it was just below freezing, but dry, when it happened on Wednesday evening, leaving the sports centre.

The reason I believe the tyre temperature is a factor as mine skipped badly when reversing out of the parking space leaving work last night. but five miles later in a supermarket carpark for a few mins it didn't. The tyres had warmed up within this period and the temps have been very cold over the last week  s:? :? s:?

Since the weather has warmed up the problem has totally disappeared so I now make the assumption that it was down to a combo of worn tyres and very cold temperatures making them harder and skip for reasons explained before on the geometry  s:wink:  s:wink:

Just noticed this today for the first time.  Reversing out of a space on full lock and there was a thump like I was running over something.  Pulled back into the space and pulled back out and it did it again.

I'm on Toyos that have maybe 3,000 miles on them.

If i do a hard brake and turn either way I have sometihng like this from the front right.

Im not sure what can be loose ? i have new teins fitted by tein specialist. I tried things last time I had the wheel off no play at all.

Maybe I have a buckled wheel or disk or something.
