That's why your cable feels rough....much better than mine were though.  See 'Venhill' mentioned above.

Whilst you are investigating(or even afterwards), would a battery isolator switch be useful?

Excellent thank you Alex - that's the right shape, I just one that is a bit longer now.. the design of the TBO requires the arm to be about 3cm longer (need to measure exactly still).

The cable seems to travel alright but there is a sort of grinding feeling. Hopefully lube will improve it. Do you lube from caliper side or from inside the car?

Yeah, top image is the MR2, below is the severely whipped Manky Celica! The 2zz is the worst sludgy engine I've ever seen by quite some stretch!
