Title: Rusting rear member
Post by: michaelb on September 17, 2018, 19:45
Hi all, my rear member has a hole rusted through it and the rear chassis is showing general signs of rust. Could I weld up the hole and treat the rest with rust proofing stuff? Also one of my bushes in the subframe is seized in, the one that adjusts the toe angle. Help appreciated!

Bite the bullet buy a new sub frame

Buy - treat - fit - forget
plus a geo afterwards

If go for new sub frame you can afford to use more violence on the other bit.

Or how much would a brand new subframe be?

your local Toyoata dealer

Part number 51206 - 17040 (face lift)

I believe a face lift sub frame will fit a pre face lift car, But, a PFL will not fit an FL car.

Still worth asking Mr T.

You may bump in to a friendly parts person that may give you some sort of club discount.

300 ish is what Toyota charge.
If the cam bolts are rusted in and you have a hole it's probably best to bin the whole thing.
Dean may have some good ones.
Ask @Carolyn (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=22891) if she would mind taking a look for you.
Either way it will need filling with wax oil or dinitrol and something on the outside too like hammerite.
Then a full 4 wheel alignment.

I went for Dynax S50 for the inside and good ole hammerite smooth on the outside.

And then polished it and then waxed it. Iknow.. Iknow, I'm one sick detailing puppy.

Dean does have some, but he's off on his holidays now and not back until 6 October. I'm in the middle of getting my 2zz installed and this would be the best time to replace the subframe. I may just have to bite the bullet and by a new one. The bolts and arms are seized on the current one.

I've no idea, the mechanic is doing it all. If it does involve cutting the subframe, what's the solution?

Does the 2zz install not involve cutting a chunk out of the subframe for the gearbox anyway?

FFS NO!
That's only in a V6 swap where you are changing the gearbox for something a little bigger.

I purchased a second hand one on eBay checked and had powder coated no issues.

My old one has a hole in usual spot. But when you look inside it via hole test is fine. I intend to weld up the hole and keep as a spare. As these sub frames are a welded part this is fine.

It will probs end up being stronger in the rotted area than when created a steels not that thick

The other problem is one of the bushes is seized solid to the subframe. It's totally immovable. I'm happy to get a second hand subframe as I know Dean Rozier has some good ones but he's away on holiday now for 3 weeks and I'm getting the conversion done as we speak. I need a subframe now.

I had one hole near the exhaust. Welded it up nicely, and cleaned everything up and repainted it with rustoleum. Probably cost a tenner.

Good. I wanted to ask but didn't want to sound daft. I know mine are seized, but the subframe is good so wanted a solution. Nice winter project for me
