ok, im getting very worried now  s:( :( s:(

ive just had the car for like 2 weeks, and when warm my car sounds very strange, very rattley, dont think its the v belt tensioner?

im not very mechanically minded, but it sounds like there is something wrong... the car drives perfect nevertheless, just sounds like a tractor!

could it be a precat failure? im gna take it to the toyota dealer 2morw soon as i get back from uni... hope its not too bad!

ive got a sound clip of it, any ideas?

My god, that sounds like a bag of nails.  s:shock:  s:shock:

Most people get lack of power symptoms before engine noise when the pre-cats go, but check your oil just to make sure.

That does sound quite 'clattery'
Like Ekona says, check oil, and how is it performing?

I would be interested to hear a clip of a 'normal' sounding engine (if there is such a thing in MR2 World!) as i'm not convinced about mine either!

Good luck with getting it sorted.

Cheers

Roo.

theres loads of oil inside, its around 3/4 on the dipstick...

this seems bad  s:( :( s:(

new engine is the most likely option?

Have you ever checked the pre-cats by removing the 02 sensors, or had them inspected?

Just out of interest, what year car is it - and what mileage ?

It could just be something loose that's rattling, and perfectly ok: I wouldn't worry too soon. Lots of oil is a good sign.

What oil are you using? Real thin oil could cause excessive rattley noises...

its got castrol gtx at the moment, 10/40, which i think is ok?

the car is a w reg, and only had 21000miles on it, has full service history aswell... getting very worried now, going to wake up early tommorow before i go to uni and get it checked at the toyota dealer, ive got uni at 11 so go go to toyota soon as it opens at 9!

hope its not something bad  s:( :( s:(  love this car dont want to be without it too long!

Well good luck with getting it sorted at the dealer. If its still performing well, has FSH and low mileage and has plenty of oil, all the good signs are there, from what I've read on the pre cat issue..

Hopefully will just be a rattle or something stupid and easily-fixable like that.

Cheers

MrT normal opens 8 - 8.30am. It maybe just something and nothing, heatshield loose etc. So do not worry until you have to.

Just realised thats exactly what my engine has always sounded like, but I've never thought twice about it, my car doesn't use oil and precats are intact (till i get a good day to remove them)

will be interesting to see the diagnosis on this one.

Any update on this?
My motor sounds a little rattly when it's warmed up, but has plenty of oil and still drives fine, only notice it when at idle with the roof down, or if I get out with it still running.

Well last week, my big-end-bearings started knocking above 2k rpm & my exhaust was spitting unburnt oil. Dont know if this was related to it or not so would remain cautious about your noise.

one mechanic who looked at it reckoned it was oil starvation in its early life which has caused the piston rings to stick into the pistons making for a poor seal on each cylinder and poor compression, allowing oil to pass the rings, giving the resultant starvation and sticking of the rings

Don't want to make anybody nervous now though...

hope your is still healthy,

Richie

I would take it to another dealer for a 2nd opinion, I told them that mine was making a noise and the techy bloke said it was meant to sound like it, took it to another dealer as not satisfied who id'd the noise as the V Belt tensioner without even opening the bonnet. They cannot be trusted.

Even more reason - they are part of the Rayleigh/Chelmsford Toyota Lookers group - I got mine checked at Rayleigh...useless.
