Hey chaps,

I've just found a place that have agreed to do my pre-cat removal in Camberley, Surrey. The garage is called Powerhouse Garage Ltd and I've booked it in for next Wednesday. He said he hasn't done one before but it's something he'd be happy to do. I explained that the emissions wont be affected (as that was something he said he was worried about straight away) and I'll also print out the guide here for him to show him how it's done.

I'll let you all know how it goes, but it could be a good option for us Surrey chaps. Labour charges are £57.50/ hour...

Get the exhaust shield off and start squirting the bolts with WD40, Plusgas etc everyday before you take it in. Should bring down the time required if your lucky.

Manifold shield - presumably that's what you meant.   s:wink:  s:wink:

When I was dabbling in there I thought the 5 nuts & studs that fasten the manifold to the block could be easily soaked, however the three bolts at the bottom end seemed fairly hidden away.  Am I right? or does another bit of shield need to be removed to make these accessible for the Plusgas treament?

No, you can get to them from the top with the manifold shield off. I reckon they are much easier from underneath, but you would have to ramp it, have a pit, or whatever.

I really awnt to do this, but I'm not the most clued up when it comes to the engine  bay! Can someone tell me exactly which bolts to spray? A pic of the egnine bay would help also... sorry to be so dumb.. exterior car modding I can do, engine work... no idea!

You expect me to type and think at the same time !! I'm a bloke I can't multi task  s:) :) s:)

Slurpy, there are four bolts holding the outer Exhaust manifold shield onto the manifold. Two at the top and one either side, if I remember rightly they are 12mm socket size (need to get out more).  You will probably have to take off at least one of the O2 sensors before you can lift the shield off and this would be best done with a 22mm O2 (Lambda) socket. Failing that you should be able to get it undone with a 22mm spanner. Carefull when you put the sensor back as it is easy to cross thread them if in a hurry. You will need to remove the lower shield so that you can see the manifold to main cat bolts. I found drowning them in wd40 and leaving them over night helped a great deal and the last thing you want is a call from the garage to say they need to re drill your head due to snapped exhaust studs (one went on mine)

You could just get one of these instead

Bought from Che over on SC should go on at the weekend weather permitting (oh for a garage)
