Just wondering if anyone has had mis-fires due the above? My newly purchased 2001 model has, seems to have had a continuing trickle of water over the top of the head for which a small amout has found its way into one plug port. The end result was bad mis-fire to the point that engine management light came on. My local dealer has diagnosed a single faulty coil pack plus the need for a set of new plugs. I changed the plugs as I didnt want to pay £56 for such a simple job which was not covered on the used car warranty only to find this wet plug body. All mis-fires seem to have gone but I am having the coil pack replaced on warranty. Has anyone seen this possible problem of water ingress before, I might be totally wrong in my assumptions that its water but the head is stained so its happened over a period of time not just recently or is it a thing that single coil packs play up at times?

I take it you still have the tray attached under the slats in the engine hood? Some people have removed this, which would invite water straight into the engine bay, but I'm not aware of any issues to level of severity that you've got though  s:? :? s:?  (maybe it was removed by a previous owner and replaced before you bought it?)

The other thing to check is the integrity of the rubber seal that runs along the back lip of the engine bay. This should be intact across the entire width of the engine bay, except for a couple of inches at each end. Its a crimp fit onto the metal lip, so easy to pull off and re-apply, but if you've had water ingress there you might see signs on either the rubber or the portion of engine hood that it comes into contact with.

Thanks for those tips, yes the tray is still fitted and I would never remove that as its clearly a problem, I will check the rubber seal later today, just seems that the head has had a lot of water over it not just a few quick exposures!
Not really something you would have thought about!

If you ever park the car on a downhill, that tray will only collect all the water that comes through the grill and pour it on the engine...  s:? :? s:?
Sure you can live without 500hp, but it\'s languishing.

Trays fitted fully and seals in place ok! So any water getting in is either driven rain or from packing car on a slope. I am on a flat area so its happened before I purchased the car!

Ahhh ... Gravity! I discounted this because the back end of the tray is raised, so I figured water wouldn't run off it that way...... but then there's no telling where it'll track to and land when it spills over the sides.

Let's hope your new plugs and warrantied coil will sort this one out for you normanh.
