Anyone got a tracker? Which one?  could a theif find it easy and remove?
Had me last car stolen, and he took me mobile too.. police were not keen to 'ping' the mobile although  they said if it had a tracker they would find it.  Cheers

Be careful with tracker - someone on the Boxa forum had their car stolen, it was recovered with tracker and that goes on the HPI for the car and puts some buyers off in the future.  Why I don't know, but your car is forever known as a stolen recovered.

I had one in my first T-5. It came with the car and got me 15% off with volvo owners insurance.

Had a 100 quid per year subscription though but at the time that was about the 15%   s:cry:  s:cry:

Fortunatley it was never tested.

One night I was wasting time watching some traffic cop show on Men and Motors.
Anyhow they had a guy on there who's civic R was stolen. Showed the police using the tracker system to try and chase the car. Worked a bit like sonar the closer they got the more frantic the beeping (as well as giving a rough idea of direction). ANyway they found the guys civic hidden away down some alley way locked up. It was so well hidden if he hadn't of had the tracker I doubt they would have found it at all.

If I had a high value desirable car (>20k) I would defiantely get one. For the MR2 I don't know if I could justify the cost. Certainly my friends insurance company insisted he have one for his boxter.

If a vehicle has a 'tracker' fitted, then if the car is reported stolen, and thus the 'Tracker' is activated, this is reported directly to MIAFTA who in turn notifiy HPI.  This is why is shows on a HPI report as 'Stolen & Recovered'

(Just to go a little deeper - one of the reasons MIAFTA notify HPI is for insurance companies to check.  For instance, say the car was initially stolen and then recovered - and this was reported to MIAFTA - and then to HPI - your insurance company may then ask if your vehicle was then reported stolen again, for proof of the repair work completed from the first instance the car was stolen - if they believe that it was not sufficient, your insurance may actually be invalid - this is due to the fact that if the repairs were not sufficient enough to ensure the vehicle is 'secure' then the vehicle could not be insured against theft)

 :-) :-) :-)

I know this 'might' put some people of, but my personal opinion is that - yes the vehicle was stolen, but thanks to the investment in the tracker, the car was recovered.  Hence why I have one in all my cars and yes - there is also one in the Renault !

In fairness though, I dont pay for the subsciption, its paid by the company  :-) :-) :-)

Tracker is brilliant though...on Sunday 3 of our traffic cars were out and their trackers started going crazy in our area, I called tracker with the activation numbers and 3 lorries (painted lime green and red, not the most subtle) had been stolen from Greenwich value of lots of thousands of pounds. Within half an hour we had found them all, the local pike...sorry travellers, had decided to nick them and bring them home, probably planning on doing some tarmacing next week and we scuppered their plans.

I can't get insured on the Elise UNLESS it has one............

Costs a bit, but I reckon worth every penny........Tracker themselves were a very good company too.....very courteous and friendly and the job was done to activate it in about a minute.....

I have an RAC Trackstar on the Scooby - comes as standard on UK STI's. It costs £30 per quarter for the subscription. I believe that the installation cost is about £400.

A lot of people on Scoobynet have commented on how incompetent Trackstar are if you have any problems, also some people claim that it's not worthwhile any more as thieves apparently have a scanner device that lets them locate it quickly and remove it. Still, I can't see local scrotes having one of these, and there have been various people on there who have had their car recovered quickly thanks to it.

I've never really thought about getting one for the MR2 as I can't really see it being stolen, given the alarm/immobiliser. I don't think it's really the sort of car that would be stolen to order using a tow-truck or something, as might happen with the Scooby...

in my opinion (no details on an open forum) tracker is a far more effective system than trackstar.

trackstar is a satellite based system using gps. it gives the dude in the control room live updates on the vehicles position and current speed.  sadly the numpty in the control room takes about 40 minutes to refer this live information to the cops. great idea, but the infrastructure is not good enough to make the most from it

tracker is a radio based system. the unit in the car is activated once the vehicle is reported stolen......the petrol wasters (polis) the drive around an area and the radio waves are picked up by the receivers in cars. therefore the cops are gettin the actual info at the relevant time. they then tell all their other dibble mates where they are and the car usually gets found in less than an hour. all 43 forces have it, including their helicopters

i cant really justify it in the '2 but i hope i dont live to regret it. plus im still in credit overall with my insurance companies from a payout in 1999.

Not a fan of the police then...I am sure that the owner of the thousands of pounds worth of lorries the other day that the police picked up withing 30 mins was grateful to us for driving around and locating them!

liz, u got me all wrong, i love the cops.  u have a pm.

i was just trying to point out the merits of each system stating that the tracker IMHO is better than the trackstar system.

my thoughts on traffic cops are.........unprintable.

for my money tracker is superior to trackstar. both are rather expensive. i think if the subscriptions were less then i would get one.

The police were fantastic when i had my Focus stolen.  Although my mam was flirting with them ,, which was fun.    s:) :) s:)  Sorry, completly off topic..

How about just hardwiring in a mobile phone charger and hide the phone.  Ping it from one of the internet locating services should your phone be stolen.. cheep and chearfull, but not that good.
