Found this guy on that web auction site. Considering replacing the Fisher Price with one of these fly MD units. How easy a job would it be? Will there be any power/tuning issues? Anyone fitted any of the units?

I haven't fitted one myself.  Changed my stereo to a single DIN and it was pretty easy.

I havnt fitted one myself either, but the poineer one(with all the pretty colours) on his page is the same one i have except mine is a CD Tape not a CD MD, i should think it is a straight swap, i think it is a little thinner than stock as it has a surround with it. Mine came with the car as mine is an MR-S and the Jap stereo's dont work over here.

Valves do break or burn out, but they have a really good redeaming feature, in a word "Feeling". A Thermionic valve amplifier works in analogue and will create a warmer sound over a modern day electronic amplifier, its still the choice of high end sound systems and are freely available in good stereo shops, i've just never seen one for a car and for the life of me i dont understand why anyone would bother, the sound from outside would destroy the benefits of the amp

Valves were incredibly fragile - they'd brake through use, break through vibration, break if you looked at them... AFAIK they are a lot more robust now, more comparable to transistors than fragile glass jars  s;) s;)

You get a more 'natural' sound from a valve than a transistor, thanks to it's greater ramp up & ramp down time with regard to the voltage they are switching, compared to a transistor (which is basically instantly 'on' or 'off')

That's my understanding, though I'm sure if we have a resisdent electronics engineer they'll be able to tell me how woefully inaccurate I am  s:) s:)

Yep I've had experience with a lot of rack mounted valve pre-amps being roadied to gigs around the country and they're a darn sight tougher than they used to be!

I can see how this would appeal if you drive a well-insulated high-end saloon but not a good investment for a naked roadster.

How easy was the iPod dongle to fit?  Any chance of a fitting guide?  I posted a query ages ago about adding one of these to my DEH-P77MP, but haven't got round to fitting one yet.  I am now sorely tempted to do this, as they have gotten very cheap lately.

A lot of mates at work have been recently buying valve amps for their home systems from China from a company called Jolida. They look the biz with the valves and transformers on show, and have a top sound for the dosh. Thinking of upgrading my amp for one. Oh the valves last about six years before they need replacing  s:wink: :wink: s:wink:

It was a piece of cake - I just tapped into the permenant +ve and -ve's in the Pioneer stereo sub-loom (I know, not the best way to do it, really, but valid  s;) s;) ), fed the power and link wires up into the glovebox from behind the stereo (really easy) and then velcroed it to the side of the glovebox with the provided velcro..

Would take half an hour to add it to an existing install I reckon, if that.. depending how quick you can get the sides to the center console bit off, and the heater controls facia  s:) s:)

Controls on the P70BT are nice and intuitive, though not the greatest.. probably about as good as you can get on a small screen without going up to a touch screen device, though.

What it like using the phone? My local retailer just told me hes fitted 3 and hes had problems with all.

He told me to wait for the newer version the DEH P55BT

Well I can make calls from the phone OK, no idea if I can receive them as nobody has called me on it yet  s;) s;)

I haven't managed to transfer the phone book to the stereo yet, though, which makes dialling from the stereo basically impossible..

With regards to the valve one, I very much doubt it sits on the amplification stage.  I have never heard of a valve amp producing 45wpc at any price level.

I reckon the valve sits at the cd player's DAC stage and at that price I doubt it's any good...
