Are there any downsides to fitting a straight forward aftermarket manifold ? Like will it cause any smells, any issues, any engine light etc ? Will the car run better or worse (from anyones experience!) does the power band change, throttle response low down etc?

My mechanic has said a bolt was snapped off something on the heat shields and it's been replaced now. Yet to pick the car up and test it!!! Hoping for the best.

Yes good aftermarket manifolds are an excellent idea.  'Toyosports' make a decent one.  Won't make much difference to performance (perhaps a better mid-range) but your old pre-cat cans are getting pretty old now, so a good replacement makes sense.

Is any one item seemingly better than the other?

Pricing seems far off between the options available, are the more expensive items worth the buy?

Have seen a few different types and can't work out why there are so many, or which is the best!

'Zero' exhaust components are very good indeed.  Very well designed and produced. But they are expensive.  Some of the cheaper ones are bobbins and best avoided.  The best budget buy is Toyosports.

The gaskets that come with it are not the best - get OEM steel head to manifold gasket and OEM crushrings for manifold to cat.  They perform best if you wrap them. Do it on the bench, wrapping in the car is a pita.
