Stereo Wiring Help Please!

I'm need to wire in a post-03 OEM Toyota stereo to a pre-03 car that has no stereo fitted. The stereo I am fitting has no leads or plugs with it but several sockets on the rear for ones to plug into. Can anyone tell me which socket/sockets is the one I need to use and if at all possible does anyone have a wiring diagram they could email to me? I need to know which terminals are which for the usual ie: ignition live, permanent live, earth, speakers etc?

Also does anyone have any connector blocks that they have cut off when upgrading etc which I could buy?

Assuming no ones been busy with the wire cutters, the stereo will plug straight into the cars loom. Toyota havent changed thier audio wiring in about a decade... s:wink: :wink: s:wink:

So it's just a case of matching the one wiring block I've got on the end of the loom with a corresponding socket on the stereo?

Sorry if I'm being thick guys s:oops: :oops: s:oops: but I've only got one plug coming from the cars loom, this fed everything on the old Sony double din unit (power, speakers etc etc), but on the back of the post-03 stereo there are space for four different plugs on the back and none of them seem to correspond exactly with the plug coming from my cars loom!

Do I need a plug convertor of some sort, something to convert the plug on the loom to one that will fit the stereo?

Any help much appreciated s:)

You need to remove the Sony adaptor loom first (the car wiring loom has white plugs, the adaptor has black)

You may find that some of the connectors are tucked away under the carpet on top of the tunnel - follow the loom back under the carpet and you will see where I mean.

I still haven't sorted this I'm afraid s:oops: :oops: s:oops: I've checked it today and traced the wiring back etc but unfortunately a Sony loom adaptor hasn't been used, someone has actually cut off the Toyota connector and soldered a Sony one on in it's place s:x :x s:x Is the only way forward to cut the Sony one off again and replace it with a Toyota one? The problem is I haven't got a Toyota one! Any ideas please? s:)

here's a suggestion that might work ... but you might end up with a lot of wires under the carpet s:? :? s:?

Get a Sony to ISO and plug it into the wiring that's in the car.
Then an ISO to <your head unit make> and plug that in.
Then plug the head unit in using the wiring adapter that is supplied with it.

The trouble is, I'm not sure if the ISO adpaters are supposed to work in reverse s:? :? s:?
Perhaps a trip to your local, friendly car audio shop might result in you being able to 'borrow' the bits to make sure they fit and work before handing over your cash?

That might work Phil, but like you say there would be so much wire to try and hide under the carpet s:? :? s:? I did try a local audio shop yesterday but I'm afraid they were less than friendly! All they wanted to do was get me to book the car in so they could sort it themselves and charge me a furtune for doing so! What I really need is a Toyota connector from somewhere so I can solder it back in place and put the wiring back to standard. I've placed a wanted advert in the for sale section but no luck so far s:(

Sounds like all you want is someone to snip the last 3 inches off a wiring loom where it hits the stereo connector. Maybe from a breaker or write off.

Why not try a PM to the member "Jap GT300" he may have something, he has recently broken a few MR2's and should be able to help. even if its just with a whole replacement of the cable (god knows where-else it goes) or just a few inches of it for your splice idea.

I have tried a couple of breakers yards cos like you say I just need the connector snipping off, but everyone wants to sell me a complete vehicle loom!!!

Definately try Adam (Jap GT300). I wanted a connector off the main wiring loom and Adam sorted me out in no time. He's a top bloke s:)

I've also sourced an 'Autoleads' connector that is supposed to be a direct replacement for an OEM one but I haven't wired it in yet, I'm going to wait for Adams to turn up.

One question though, which socket does the connector plug into on the back of the head unit? There's 4 in total and the Autoleads one at least seems to plug into 3 of them! Looking at the back of the head unit is it the one at the bottom right next to the aerial socket?
