hi there and welcome to the club.

before you get flamed by the old boys here, take some time to search round this forum.  there is virtually nothing that cannot be revealed by using the search button at the top right of the page.

i entered 'replacing head unit' and the following was revealed.

http://www.mr2roc.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1934&highlight=replacing+head+unit

anything that cannot be found by this method will be answered by the guru's here, but in fairness they do get a little fed up with folks who dont even look before asking.

we will all be along here soon to say welcome, and we hope that you get the most from your car.

i have changed my head unit, and if u need any specific help please ask.

cheers, and hi again

Cough.... Cough....    STICKIES... ahem...

ALL UK MR2's have had double DINS fitted, in the case of the '99 - '03, it was an aftermarket Sony... But read the rather obvious sticky topics for more info...

Hi Rob
I don't recall reading any threads about anyone fitting an aftermarket double-din.  Most folk go for a single-din if the stock one needs replacement. (Lots of threads on that by the way.)

im sorry if i appeared arsey, (not sure i did but sorry anyhow).  i even posted the link that went str8 to the topic you were looking for.

i was kinda trying to say, that if you look around here you will find out pretty much anything about your car, mostly all the good things about it.

i was just trying to save you from a roasting, some would argue that just posting yes to reply to you would then lead to asking further questions about topics which had been extensively covered.  additionally, you may discover other points that would not have been answered with a simple yes or one line answer.  theres no nasty guys on here, but bear in mind, if everyone asked the same questions over and over again, the forum would become very large and disjointed, not to mention slow and bogged down with many side threads.

so please, take my welcome as it was intended, ask as many questions as you feel like asking, and if this is your first time in a RWD car then please read some of the safety type posts regarding winter/wet weather/tyre pressures and sizes and so on.

no doubt someone else will tell you about the precats cos i CBA @ 0536 in the morning.

cheers

I totally agree.  A fair number of the threads posted are now replied to with a comment about using the search.  Some of the replies are blunt to say the least and risk alienating new members.

Anyway, welcome Rob   s:D :D s:D

Has anyone actually fitted an aftermarket double DIN sized unit into an MR2? (Not the MR T or Sony one...) In theory it should fit but you never know until you try these things..... Do the mounting points line up? The Sony and Mr T units might not be standard size. After all, the vertical metal supports are not parallel!

Wouldn't it be easier, and a lot quicker, to do a Search and find the information for yourself in ten minutes, instead of waiting for a few dribs and drabs of information to appear on your thread over the course of a week or two?

To be fair, your original post was a bit vague ("could someone post up some pics of after market double units fitted? (if indeed they will fit)") and if no-one has fitted an aftermarket double-din then no-one will post pics.

Anyways, there might be few pics along in a min so I'll move out the way   s:D :D s:D

Quote from: "red_leicester"...To be fair, your original post was a bit vague...

sorry, i though my topic title said it all..... concise, extact & to the point...

the secondary bit was just that, ie secondary...

and belive it or not i don't spend hours staring at a post to see if someone's responded. i post a question, then comeback later....

similarly, i did do a search. but, as i've mentioned, i'm fairly new, & such a seemingly busy chat forum is quite a lot to take in, in 1 go.

thanks for all the help anyway.

ps. i do not enjoy getting off on the wrong foot on a new forum, but i don't think i've been difficult. the way it's been put is that every possible question has been asked, don't ask anything new, do a search.... jeez

peace

I know I shouldn't but I'm going to stick my oar in anyway.

You post is entitled "So is the MR2 double DIN or not"
on that note, the answer would have to be:
No the MR2 is a car they don't come in double or single DIN.

I know it's in the Audio / Security / Electrical section of the site and you could assume people would be able to understand the question. Indeed, enid_b posted a welcome, some advice and a link to a relevent topic within 4.5 hours  which isn't bad for a forum comprised of working types. But concise, extact & to the point... is isn't.

Right, I'm going to take my oar back out again now and say welcome to the club. There is loads of info on here and even more ways to spend your money so stick around and have some fun.

What I meant about it being a bit vague was that the question or point you were getting at seemed a bit vague.

The answer to the title of the thread is, obviously, yes the MR2 is double-din.  Every UK-spec MR2 is double-din.  It's not a tricky one to answer.

I guess what you were actually asking is "can an aftermarket double-din stereo be made to fit".  No-one knows, it seems, coz no-one has done it!  But maybe you weren't to know that.

I'm sorry if I came over a bit strong.  Let us know if you fit an aftermarket double-din, then any newbies who come along will be able to glean the info from you   s:wink:  s:wink:

Peace indeed.  s:) :) s:)

Welcome Rob, i hope you enjoy your time with us and we get to meet you in person.
When i had my head unit replaced, we found that although it looks like a double din unit, it doesn't have the normal mountings for double din. Rather it all sat in a frame for double din, but if you wanted to replace it with a single din, all the tin had to come out and be replaced. Mine's an 03 by the way which had the "Fisher Price" h/u in!

There is some good stuff on here about what you need and where to find it if you want to replace your head unit, just do a search and you'll find it. And it's not as complicated as all that, so don't worry about it - too much  s:wink:  s:wink:

We're generally a friendly lot and once people get to know you, we'll all get along just fine i'm sure.

Good luck  s:D :D s:D

Hi Rob,

I have an aftermarket double din head unit in my car, it came when i brought it as it is an MR-S i was told that the Jap Head unit wouldnt work over here so they replaced it with an aftermarket double din. It is fitted and the head unit is fine, just the surround on it doesnt quite fit as my double din is a little thinner than stock, i think.

I replaced the stock Sony double din unit for a MD/CD double din Sony unit (hate tapes and CD's scratch easy and are too bulky and did not hane an MP3 player back then!). the connectors were not the same and the old surround would not fit but it looks great and there were still plenty of holes for the brackets to allign onto (in fact if my memory serves the holes were marked up by car manufacturer on the side of the unit)  s:) :) s:)

the stock stero is double din but teh fascia is sligthy wider to fit teh surround

see  m http://www.mr2roc.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=12583 m

if you fit a standard double din you will need teh side spacer shown in that article, then everything will line up with teh surround
