Well, I got my bits and pieces ready, tools handy, pot of tea brewing, and various printouts from the internet on how to remove the stock HU... and everything was going fine, until I came to the last 4 screws holding the HU to the car... JEEEEEEZ they're on tight, I can't shift em....

I think I nedd to get a thinner shafted screw driver, for a firmer purchase on the screws, cos if I'm not care full I'll end up rounding the bu99ers off.....

Oh, & FYI this is the HU that'll be replacing the '03 stock thingy-ma-bob:

Sony MEX BT5000  s:twisted:  s:twisted:

Should be a darn sight better than having one of those STOOOPID bluetooth things hanging off ones ear!

Also there's an option for an Ipod interface, but I had one on a old Kenwood Unit, and frankly it was pants! Does anyone have anyexperience of the Sony one? & before anyone says it I know it's not gonna be anything like as good as the full speed Alpine thing - but I CAN stream MP3's from my phone [Sony K800i] via bluetooth, which is novel and I can't wait to give that a bash!

Watch this space for a review (if anyone's intrested) once I can shift those 8loody screws!!!  s:roll:  s:roll:

Once you do get the Fisher Price HU out then get it straight on ebay. Mine sold for about £100 and I've heard that they can go for more than that.

Haven't tried the sony with Ipod, but I have a Clarion, and it's a bit cack.

Mine went for something like £270... But you have to find a special kind of idiot to get that kind of cash, and my idiot was really special... She wrote back a week later telling me the hole in her dashboard wasn't big enough...  s:roll:  s:roll:

I cant even get the screw caps off at the bottom of the plastic fascias on the mounting rails, if you know what i mean. Is there a trick to this, i seem to be destroying them

The hours i spent looking around for something like that and it was right under my nose!

Thank you so much for that.

Well the head unit is in and looks great, perhaps ill take a few snaps tomorrow. I have put in the pioneer deh p55bt. The bluetooth works great and i am very pleased with it. I do have a few outstanding problems that i need to sort out. Perhaps anyone here might be able to point me in the right direction.

1. Pulling apart the dashboard, the silver plastic fascias at the bottom of the centre console pillars. I got one off fine but the other is FUBAR. Any idea where i can get a spare one from? How much are they?

2. The aerial. Quite simply it doesnt work. I went to halfords and bought the adapter that i thought i needed, a standard aerial connection to ISO aerial connection adaptor. This doesnt fit my headunit but does seem to accept the cable from the car! Any ideas?

3. I have bought a pioneer ipod adaptor. It has a cable running out of it that says battery terminal. Im aware im sounding a bit stupid here, but i assume this attaches to the terminal on the battery. How on earth do i get it there? Am i going to be ok extending the wire? It does say in the manual not to shorten it but im assuming that lengthening it will be fine?

Thanks guys.

1) I would try a toyota dealer and get a price, either that or look for a crashed car breaking for spares on ebay or 24/7 spares (try google). Alternatively, pm Jap_GT300 (adam) and ask if he has any available as he normally has roadster stuff kicking around for sale.

2) What do you mean when you say your aerieal doesnt work; does it not go up / down or is it simply a case of it doesnt pick anything up?

3) For something such as an ipod interface, you will be fine to take an electrical feed off of the cigarette lighter. If you were to take a feed from the battery terminal itself, you would have to ensure that you used an inline fuse near to the battery terminal.

Hope this helps,

Richie.

1. Thanks for that, very helpfull ill see what i can do!

2. Well the cable from the car has a small metal rod on the end, this seems to slot into the serial port on the new h/u but just the end of it. It also has two small metal sprung connections on the side of it. The whole plug including the connections on its side slides into the old h/u.

So with just the end of it plugged into the new h/u the aerial doesnt pop up, neither do i get any kind of reception either.

3. The ipod adaptor. the line does have a fuse in it, but i like the idea of using the cigarette lighter terminal as i never use that anyway! With the fuse inline too i cant imagine anything could go wrong, just have to work out which bit to connect it to.

Thanks

did your aerial go up with your previous stereo?

The aeriel up/down feature is controlled by an output on the back of your stereo which sends either 12v / 0v to the aeriel motor to tell it whether the aeriel should be up or down.

The aeriel connector is purely the physical connection to the antenna, and doesn't control whether the antenna goes up or down.

so to make sure your antenna goes up, you have to ensure that the signal is applied to the aeriel control wire, from your head-unit.

I think that the antenna control wire is black in colour, but cant remember. Might be worth a look to make sure it is connected up.

Have found a wiring diagram in another post, here

With regards to taking a feed off of the cigarrette lighter, might be worth a read through the audio/security / electrical forum as i'm certain that somebody has posted information on this before.

Hope the above helps,

Richie.

Yes the aerial went up with the original stereo. In the back of the original stereo was the black cable (plugged into "ant") and a large wiring loom with lots of wires.

Ive bought the adaptor for the wires that plugs straight into the new stereo and have the black cable left over, which i assumed was the aerial cable. So ive plugged it in to the antenna jack on the new headunit. But the aerial doesnt go up and i dont get any reception.

Ive just been out there and it seems properly plugged in to me

Thanks again

<edit>
Right i think i might have found something here. Below is the link to the installation manual

http://www.service.pioneer-eur.com/peeservice/instrmanuals.nsf/0/2E1475AE8CF5B58EC125712600336448/$File/CRD4065_DEH-P55BT.pdf

On page 3 and 4 (4 and 5 of the pdf it has the wiring diagram. On page four it shows 6* and 7* as an auto-antenna relay control terminal. I should connect these together if 5* is an antenna contol type. 5 is a red cable shown on page 3 of the manual.

So it looks to me like i have to connect 6* and 7*, but i just want to check as you thought that maybe the antenna control cable was black and not red as this indicates.

1* seems to show a powers feed that i think i can use for my ipod adapter as i seem to gather from this thread http://www.mr2roc.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9287&highlight=power

Hope im not wildly off the mark here

Thanks again

ok on page 5 of your installation manual, cable 7* is the feed from your head unit which "tells" the aeriel whether to go up or down.

On the Cars wiring loom, there should be a cable which i believe to be grey in colour (going on this)

To make your aeriel go up / down, you must connect this grey wire to terminal 7* from the back of your head unit.

With regards to your power source for your iPod interface, I see that it requires a permanent power supply and therefore you cannot take this off of the cigarette lighter socket as it is switched with the ignition.

Therefore I suggest you take your permanent power feed off of a supply at the steering column ignition terminal. I'm afraid i dont know which feed is the permanent one from the top of my head but hopefully somebody else reading this could confirm or even suggest a better feed?
