Hi, just a quick question about the electric aerial: is it nessesary/advisable to put some Teflon lube on it every now and then to keep it running smoothly in all weathers, or am I being overly worried?
(I searched, but couldn't find anything relevant).
Thanks

The toothed nylon aerial core and motor assembly is a sealed structure. I took mine apart at 100,000 miles and it was still full of grease.

However, the core (which had broken) was much more brittle than the new replacement I put in. Deterioration with age I guess.

As for the chrome outer, yes its sensible to at least keep it clean, and a light lube will help prevent grit getting dragged into the mechanism when it retracts.

I guess I'm trying to say that the inner core will probably fail before the chrome outer!  s:wink: :wink: s:wink:

as Ste says, nil maintenance although the nylon part does fail which is really annoying as you then have to take the wheel arch out to get to it all.

If the aerial was bent then it would be a 2 second job as you only have to take the chrome nut off at the base of the aerial and then you can just slide the aerial shaft out, nylone snake section and all iyswim

Wabbitkilla's aerial maintencnance tips;

If it's dirty, wipe it clean
Give it a wipe with some lubrication occassionally (wd40 etc)
If it breaks, replace it - usually you can just replace the "mast" which is fairly cheap and doing a search on here will find the part number.

Mine got one section slightly bent due to an argument with a carpark barrier. So it doesn't extend by one section - which actually makes it a sensible length and it still works fine without you looking like a fairground dodgem   s:lol: :lol: s:lol:
