Hi all,

I picked up my first roadster at the weekend and am loving it so far! Just a quick question; should the standard CD player play recordable CDs (i.e. Audio CDs that I have burned on my computer)? They play fine in normal CD players, and the car CD player quite happily plays normal (bought) CDs... All I get when I try is about 20 secs of whirring and then "Error". Btw, the car is an X ('00).

Many thanks,

Simon

Mine plays compilation CD I've written with my computer. X reg here as well.
It's stopped playing one of my bought CD's at the moment. I put it down to the weather.

when you write the CD, make sure you "close the session" this will make a lot of CDRs play in any player

Some cd players have dificulty with cd-r due to the flimsy labels and thin recording medium. It's worth trying a different brand. I found Tuffdiscs were ok, probably because they put an extra thick ssurface label on to protest / hide the original.
Cute & fluffy animals were definitely hurt during the production of this post, there're plenty more where they came from

Hi,

Mine's exactly the same - annoys the hell outta me because I'm stuck with the 1 or 2 shop bought CDs I managed to dig out from under my bed.
My stereo doesn't play burnt CDs and sometimes skips even shop bought CDs, even though they're in pristeen (sp?) condition!!

Think a new stereo might have to be on the cards!

With mine (2002 US spec) you have to do those stupid audio CDs. The ones where you can only put 60 or 70 minutes of music onto a CD even if it's in mp3 format. I think you can use windows media player to make these CDs.

I had the same problem start with recordable CD's on mine, then progressed to not wanting to play bought ones. So took the plunge and bought an Alpine iDA-X100 to use my iPod. Haven't looked back since and it means my glove box isn't rammed with CDs...   s:D :D s:D

US model does but does not play MP3s unless they were burned as an audio cd or whatever it is that only allows you to put on 60 minutes of music per CD.

Yes - I only ever use burned copies in the car so I don't lose my music collection to scrotes/temperature/stupidity/carelessness.  It can be sensitive to the quality of the 'burn' (I always use less than the maximum speed to make copies on a PC as this seems to help), and will also click, pop or skip if there are marks in the surface if I recall correctly from when I had the standard unit fitted.

Overall I would say it is good enough with copied audio CDs.  The Fisher Price unit won't play MP3 CDs - I had to swap the head unit to an MP3 capable one.
