I read today about the timing chain lasting around 100k, my car has 94k on the clock, so is it worth getting this changed and how much is it likely to be?

Possibly, and depends where you go   s:wink:  s:wink:

Seriously though it depends how worn yours is - some of them wear wosre than others and it all depends on how the car has been driven and the quality of the oils used. So there must be a way of measuring the stretch, but if you're uncertain and you have the cash i'd say it's worth doing.

Cost - Ste knows what the parts cost and how long it takes. Obviously depends where you take it but Mr T will probably ask silly money (as usual)

Much better price through Chris at CTP.

Strange was thinking this on my drive into work today  - I have the leak around the tensioner o ring as well and was thinking this could all be done at the same time, mine is just coming up to 94K now.

Me too, REALLY need to get it sorted.
Can this be tackled by your average garage, or is it a specialist job? Excuse my innocence but the MR2 is the only car I know of that has a timing chain rather than a Cam Belt.

Average garage I should hope...I have a friend who has a friend who has a garage and I get mates rates so hopefully not too pricey!

Yep any decently average garage will have a book containing info on timing marks and setup. I followed the step-by-step from the MrT Big Green Book.

Engine-out its a doddle. Visibility and access are a pain trying it engine-in .... but if the crank pulley and chain cover come off OK I'm pretty sure its doable with a swear box handy.

I seem to remember tem posting about a way to check the stretch in the timing chain on spyderchat. Might want to check it out, I'll look for it in a bit if I remember.

EDIT: Ha! It was on here.  l viewtopic.php?f=11&t=24357&hilit=+timing+chain l

agreed it probably would be worth changing but i thought the chain only needed checking at 100k and changing at 200k?
