Oh dear, thats a blumin shame lol. What's Din stand for?

evileye_wrx

The fascia kits can be bought for less than a tenner I think so its not the end of the world. Din is the size that a standard stereo slots into. So Double Din is the size of the stock '2 stereo

I seem to remember DIN is a German standards body like ISO. I'd hazard a guess that there is probably really a boring code number that describes the size of radio openings, but it gets shortened to DIN to keep things simple  s:) :) s:)

If you go for a double din unit these fit directly. i got a kenwood double din and used the old mountings from the old head unit.

i used the old surround as it fit the unit. It does look amateurish with the one that comes with the unit.

the stock surround from teh sony is ahaped for teh sony, not the aftermarket units, so imho does look amateurish

What is the surround that's available for £7?  Can I order it from Toyota or online somewhere?  Just bought a double-din stereo and don't want it to look bad!

Alpine CDE W203Ri will fit straight in with the original surround.

It's a piece of pi** to fit. Will take about 20 mins. all you need is the harness and an aerial adaptor

Sorry my mistake, saw surround and read single din conversion kit! LOL

Right, when I got my Sony single-DIN stereo, I researched what was needed, etc, to swap it for the OEM double DIN unit....

I fitted it (no extras required, took about 20 mins!), but having read all the info here, I also bought an adapter off Ebay, as the single-DIN in the double-din space apparently looks "a bit amateurish"..?

All that was 6 months ago!
This morning, I decided to fit it.....  s:D :D s:D

Right away, I started questioning whether I was doing the right thing: the high quality / solid build of the OEM metal brackets I was removing only served to highlight the cheap, plasticy feel of the adapter...!   s:) :) s:)

To clear some things up: the Ebay one (well, at least the one I have, and in my pre-03 car) DOES fit the right way round, with the cubby hole at the bottom.
There is a protrusion on each of the metal side plates on the car that does require that the plastic surround needs pushing a little to clear them...but it does fit, and the holes line up, etc....
There does not seem to be a clearance problem with the cubbyhole part itself, hitting stuff behind the dash, etc....

Oh...I must mention that the 4 fixing slots in the adapter are a little big, IMHO.....I reckon you're best fitting a washer to the screw, as the holes are about the size of the screw head...!

However, after test fitting the adapter, then re-fitting the OEM for comparison, I think its better using the OEM stuff, even with the 1 DIN hole under the head unit..!
This has 2 advantages: firstly, you can still use the OEM "stealth" cover, and secondly you can use the 1 x DIN space in the future for other things.

To me, the adapter looks amateurish, as there are gaps both underneath and down the side, which look FAR worse than the OEM, perfect fitment:
Here's some pix:

Just been looking for another thread and cme across this one.

There are quite a few Double DIN head units out there, all should drop in to the standard recess perfectly and take about 5 mins to fit.

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/head-units/double-din-players.html?cadid=c0k23vm94ervr1dmhffqch5515

They've came down in price quite a bit in recent years with the large volume of import cars in the UK now that come with double DIN as standard. Much better looking than a single DIN with plastic adapter IMO.
