Coloured Head

Jap GT300

This has come up recently on SC and is something I have previously thought of doing.

There was a nice picture of a metallic blue one floating about for a while.

Do you think a heat resistant spray can would do a good enough job and last?

Here is one that has been posted (it is a 2zz)

Technical note - That's not the head - it's the cam cover, and if mark's heat shield has survived with heat-resistant paint, the cam-cover should do too as it doesn't get anywhere near as hot.

I saw Marks last weekend and it still looked fresh.

So it is the cam cover, no wonder I've not been making sense all this time!

What colour would you go for?  Same colour as the car, black?  Late mark2's head red cam covers  s:shock: :shock: s:shock:

on your green car, I'd go red, but only if you get the black plastic bit to top it off.

I already have that part, I just disconnected it as soon as I got the engine.

is the plastic cam cover actually touching apart from the bolt points as its just cosmetic isnt it?

Saw Mark's painted heat sheild (where the 2 o2 plugs are) and it looked good - something I've wanted to do since I saw a pic of it on SC, but I'm guessing that it will have to wait for the new one now...

Now, I don't know the technical name for it (head I think), but the other bit of the engine that would need doing is the bit above the heat sheild but below the black plastic bit with vvti written on it.  Any know if this bit would need heat proof paint as well?

The piece you are referring to is the CAM COVER, and yes it will require heat resistant paint, because it gets pretty hot (not as hot as the heat shield though)

The head on our engine is pretty much hidden when it's in the car, so not much point painting it - besides that, in order to do so you would have to take it off the engine which is major surgery.

The CAM COVER on the other hand can be removed fairly (!) easily in order to degrease and paint it.

Yep the plastic bit is just a splash shield covering the ignitors (ie. the per-cylinder coils) and is held on by a few snap-on plastic clips (which MrT dealers usually loose when changing the plugs  s:evil: :evil: s:evil:  )

If you just wanna paint the area that's visible, you don't even have to remove it...

Dawsons's in essex do this and i think they use a special heat reistant spray i got a quote for a flip red to gold and it would cost £100 inc VAT and fitting   s:lol: :lol: s:lol:

Thats a good price.

Steve, there is also two bolts you have to take out when removing the plastic cover.

So when taking off the cam cover willI have to watch out for any internal parts or will you not see them?  Will there be much oil up this end?

When I did the rebuild on my other car, I sprayed a lot of the bits up blue (t'was my colour scheme y'see), including some bits that were bolted to the top of the engine (including a balance tube between cylinder banks, steel, got v. hot..).

I sprayed them with Plastikote from Halfords - I know, I know - but it's heat resistant to 150C, and if you give the part a light sanding (if painted/laquered metal), then four coats of undercoat, four coats of paint and a few coats of laquer on top, it seemed to last really well (aside from where it regularily got sprayed with raw petrol, oops!).

I also laquered some of the lower parts - rocker covers (trapped under the plenum on the 300, so get cooked) - the finish was quite nice, shiny blue, pretty smooth if you took your time with the stuff.. but it chipped off really easily  s:( :( s:(

Failing that you could get it professionally sprayed as Buster suggested - you get a really nice finish then (I had some professionally laquered bits done on a previous car, including a rocker cover, and it looked very nice indeed). Given the time & tedium of doing it yourself, £100 is a really good price..

Oops - forgot to add, assuming the 2zz-ge is a normal design..

When you take the rocker cover off, you'll be able to see the cams and lifters (tappets) etc. There may well be an oil sprayer tube on the underside of the rocker cover, but there shouldn't be much oil left in the top end really, just a light coating all over..

My daughter's 99 jap import came with a real carbon cover over the cam cover

My head heat shield has lasted fine with black heat paint, so I don't see why not.

I have painted my CAM cover the plastic bit RED used Toyota Chilli RED paint and no problem looks good as well...............  s:D :D s:D
SOLD No more 2. Just a bus for the family..........

Anyway, I did suspect that it would be hard to remove, so was just planning on painting the visible 5cm high or so long silver section that can get battered and rusty looking with time...

It was powdercoated though, not painted...if that makes any difference.
