alloys advice?

Hi all

Firstly, yes, I've searched, and read many threads regarding alloys on the roadster. Therefore I wonder if I can get some solid advice on the following?

My missus wants to replace the bubbled original alloys on her 2002 roadster, and also get new tyres. We want to keep the same size wheels and tyres, but have been told by a few different companies that they can supply staggered sized tyres, but not the rims.
It seems aftermarket companies do not make 15x6 and 15x6.5 in the same style so we keep being advised to go for 15x6 all round with 185's on the front and 205's on the rear.

Obviously the car is designed with slightly wider rims on the rear for a reason, even though the proper sized tyres will fit on the smaller rim.

Can anyone tell me if there is any difference to fitment when the facelift version got 16"" rims on the rear?
If not, would it be better to try and find wheels of the facelift sizes as a replacement or will 15x6 all round with the staggered tyres be fine?

Thanks in advance for any help.  s:D :D s:D

Mukka,

Rather than trying to buy some aftermarket wheels the same size why don't you just get your standard whells re-furbed?

I have just had mine re-furbed in Anthracite by The Wheel Specialist and they look fantastic.

It's an option, but with the poor quality alloy is likely to do the same again, so she'd rather pay the money on new ones. Re-furbed wheels do look fantastic, it would just be a shame to have them start to bubble again.

If you get them done well, they should last for years. Colour choice is always nice as well. The alloy isn't the problem, its Toyota's paint finish I think. For the money, its probably better and less hassle to go for a refurb. A lot of the cheaper alloys out there tend to be heavy and don't look that good, plus there is the fitment issue.

Back to your original question, the reason for the wider wheel is the wider tyres sit better on a wider rim. But if you look at say toyo site, each tyre has a range of rim widths.

IMO as long as the tyres are staggered any loss of performance would be very marginal. They might just roll under a fraction, rather than staying vertical on hard cornering. Certainly wouldn't be a problem for normal motoring. Just make sure you are in that range.

Thanks for the replies so far   s:D :D s:D

We will perhaps look at refurbs more. Any recommendations for companies in or around Sussex? I know that there are many good and also many bad ones.

Thanks Roger for the advice. We are looking to put Toyo T1R's on as they seem to be well liked by a lot of owners. I guessed as you say that it won't make heaps of difference, as long as the tyres are still staggered. But its nice to stay with the way the car was designed.

Cheers

You won't just be looking at wheel width, but offsets, stick to the stock wheels if you don't want to spend loads on decent wheels. Id possibly be tempted to source a pair of 16 inch rears off a facelift.

On the refirb issue, I had mine done probably 4 / 5 years ago through Mr T under warranty. They used a firm in Kent (sorry , don't remember the name). They did a really good 'original spec' job and the dealer had a loan set of wheels whilst they did the work. Starting to bubble a bit again now though so this may not be a problem that goes away.

Thanks for the advice.

We are now going with refurbs at http://www.lepsons.com They seem to provide a thorough service. With these refurbed they will be recovered in some new Toyo T1R's.

cheers

Hi, just had a set of the 16s of this guy on the bay http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/gtvideos/ he might be worth contacting.  I think he does the ferrari conversions and flogs almost everything of the 2s. I got mine for £25 a piece dellivered!!!!!! Do need a refurb though.......mmm......can  I put the older rear 15 inch wheels at the front with the new/old 16s at the rear?

I found asking all the breakers on the bay for the parts I want has worked a treat so far, I have a set of pre lift vents colour coded on the way, for £70!!!

Be polite and ask they can only say no!!

Hope this helps.

Elias.

I've used these guys as well for the Rays on the Zed, and they did a fantastic job at a seriously competitive price. Would definitely use them again.

Has anyone had their standard wheels refurbished in a darker colour, with a polished lip?
I am thinking this kind of colour for the spokes:

With the lip polished silver, to go on my silver 2.
Looks good in my minds eye but would be good to see pics if anyone has done it already?
Looked on the wheels sticky but couldnt see anything quite like what I have in mind.

be aware that a polished lip will be teh week point interms of corrosion

Chris has polished alloys on her old Merc and I've not even seen a set of roadster wheels that corroded this bad, they were truly awful

On a wheel without a proper lip I seriously wouldn't bother. If your going to get the lip polished get some proper wheels lol..

very nice, but Im looking at ~£200 options to improve the look of the wheels which kind of rules out anything other than a refurb.
