only trick is DONT touch the rear brace with the spanner as you remove the 10mm nut from the live terminal, the sparks are scary.
Maybe worth cleaning the MAF while you are round the back

The only thing I would say is that the rod that holds the battery closest to you has a little hook on the end that seems just to rest under the battery tray, so when undoing it, and doing it back up again DON'T DROP it. This tip comes from experience   s:wink:  s:wink:

Just to quote best practice:

Remove the -ve terminal first and replace it last.
I think that this just reduces the possibility of arcing (as in Noah!) across the positive connection as it's being broken / made.

Apologies for the thread hijack...

My battery died yesterday, about to order a new one, but everywhere I've looked says a different battery is the right one.  As far as I can tell they're all the same size, terminal type and layout but they're all showing different cranking amps, so far I've seen 350, 430 & 500 - does anyone know which one is the right one?

Thanks
Andrew

It does not answer your question, but this may be of help if you have not seen it already. There are a few battery options to choose from on this post.

Unless you need something different (higher power, lower weight) I would suggest go Toyota, certainly avoids the Halfords uncertainties, and cheaper!

Toyota supplied me with a 45Ah battery in August, cost £48.92 inc vat (old rate).

(Edit: Sorry, just realised that CCA is a different measure. The only other figures on the battery are 310A-BCI, 330A-EN but I don't know what they mean).

I thought this might help anyone else having a problem with constant flat batteries during winter when they aren't getting the car out as much as usual. I have had problems with the battery since I bought the car new in 2007. I Replaced the battery under warranty once after it went flat after I returned after a 2 week holifday in summer. The new battery still didnt hold a decent charge for a reasonable period of time in winter. I have had to use a back up battery starter a good half a dozen times this year already and get the AA out once last week, I do use it every couple of days but only short runs. So I've bought a new battery. The Toyota battery is to small and the Cold cranking pretty week about 300CCA and 45 amp/hr so I had a look for an alternative and contacted Exide which are good quality batteries they recomended a 005TE which is 65 amp/hr and 580CCA they work at very cold temp as well, I was a bit dubious because its bigger but bought it anyway it cost £65, £10 cheaper than the lower spec Toyota battery, It fits very snuggly athough it is wider and taller, length is identical. I had to modify the top brace which took 2 mins with a hammer other than that not a problem. It works fine so far and has plenty of grunt to start the car, only time will tell, but hopefully it wont let me down again. Details below

Brand: Exide
Range: Premium
Part Number: 005TE
Alternative Refrence: EA654
Voltage : 12v
Ampere-Hour Capacity at 20hr rate Ah: 65Ah
Cold Cranking Performance (Amps) SAE/EN1: 580
Dimentions LxWxH: 230mm x 173mm x 222mm
Terminal Layout: Negative (-) on left, Positive (+) on right; with the terminals on the edge of the battery closest to you
Terminal: Standard Round DIN post

Alternative part numbers: 005, 005 Yuasa, 005Se, 005TE, EA654, EB505
