I just wanted to put on a post saying how useful the Article is on meshing side intakes. I followed it step by step at the weekend with our new colour coded intakes I got recently and they look well smart! Just have to install them tonight once the no-nails has set.

Getting the old intakes out was a nightmare but once you've got the first clip off then the rest are easy. A bit of force required but as long as you're careful then it's fine.
I've installed (not sure I should say this) purple NEONS   s:twisted:  s:twisted:   in the intakes which should glow up nicely at night! Please, no p*ss-taking!    s:) :) s:)

Anyway, it is a well written, very useful and accurate guide. If any of you guys/gals are considering doing similar things... definitly take a look at it first.   s:D :D s:D

Why thank you!   s:D :D s:D   (glad to see my work is appreciated   s:wink:  s:wink:  )

when you come to put them back in, they are a bit of 'wriggle it in' fit at the back now you have the mesh on.  I had to trim a couple of bits of stray mesh that I hadnt bent over enough.

well worth it in the end tho

Neons sound cool, better if you cant see the actual tube tho (just a glow) I have three sets of neons under my baby, so if you like em, do it  s;-) ;-) s;-)

thanks

I know Hong aka PelicanRacing on Spyderchat sells these on a swap basis.  He did the mesh of my 03 vents over a year ago and he may still be in business.

Will do my best to take some pics tonight in the dark. Hopefully the bulbs are invisible, just a glow. We have one in the rear vent too... makes it look like the engine's glowing purple at night! Only have a camera phone so quality will be dodgy but i'll do me damndest.

I thought everyone was dead-set against neons? A mixed reaction though it would seem!    s:D :D s:D

I'm not looking forward to the "wriggle it in" method for fitting them back tonight. It's all gone far too easily so far, so something's bound to go wrong   s:roll:  s:roll:

I would reccomend against it.

the plastic grill is slightly different on teh 03 and when removed leaves no visible evidence. Do this on teh pre-03 and you will see where you have removed it. unless you sand and paint them.

If going to that much trouble I'd just buy the 03's as they will look infinitly better.

sorry but thats not right ?  removing the plastic grill on both models is the same. It does require care and attention and done correctly will look good.

They both have the same grills that need cutting smoothly to ensure you dont have any raised areas or indentations as its in clear view on both models.  I've done both.

interestign I loked at my 02 when I first had it and decided it wouldn't work, not disputing you Perry but any pics I'd be interested to see.

Obviously dont have the vents to take a piccy anymore and if I did I doubt i would take them apart to prove a point.  The knack is to cut the plastic grill slightly proud of the surface, then shave it back to flush with either a sharp stanley knife or scalpel.  You obviously musnt cut it below the surrounding surface.  If you find that you have a raised area that your not confident in cutting thin enough, you can rub it down carefully with 1500 wet and dry (used wet at all times) tho shaving is the best method.

Obviously if your in any doubt then you should leave it well alone, as you did   s:wink:  s:wink:

i was thinking of 03 vents, but i was worried because the silver isnt an exact match to the older model silver, wondering how much it was stand out,

not a lot, but I don't beleive they cost a lot to have sprayed if it ends up bothering you.

Maybe those of us who hate the things are just keeping quiet!  If you like them, who am I to challenge you?

I've purchase the new silver vents to go on my '00 model.  Once I fit them (had a minor disaster, so I'm waiting on another vent being sent from Japan) I'll take some pics if you like.  I'll need a moderator to add the images for me though   s:) :) s:)   Should be soon......

It's very hard to tell the difference between the new 03 silver off the vents against the 01 silver on the car. They do look 'new', but certainly not out of place and I'd imagine will blend in even more with a little ageing.

The neons didn't work though folks... nice idea but you could see the bulb too easily so they look stupid. Am going to remove them and try to get neon spots that I can set further back in the vent so they're less visible but with just a glow shining out onto the intake. We live and learn!

My missus was well pleased with the end result though. Reckon I deserve some kind of 'thanks'!   s:wink:  s:wink:

Ok, here's one for ya.

We all know that the pre-03 intakes were unpainted plastic. And that to remove 'em you just pulled – hard. And whilst pulling they would bend slightly as the plastic is soft and go back to their original shape afterwards.

So if you've got post-03 intakes already on your car and you try and pull 'em off, will the bending crack the paint, or the intake itself as they appear to be stiffer plastic?  s:? :? s:?

Answers on a postcard.

Cheers

Already removed my '03 vents three times and they are just fine  s8) 8) s8)

Someone did mention about breaking the vent though...

Ahem... one of those breaking an 03 vent was me!   s:oops:  s:oops:   As Tem says, they're pretty flexible.. it only seemed to seperate from the black grill part when I tugged excessively hard and caught an edge I think.

Someone else did crack the painted plastic part though..!   s:( :( s:(
