Had my Mr-2 for 3years, minor oil burn (1litre per 4 full tanks) and have 96k.
Thinking of either having mine rebuilt or changing for an '03+ with low mileage
I would say rebuild and change pistons etc but that's going to be major money... was just thinking of swap/rebuild, cams and unichip.
Anybody have any thoughts on this?
Or reasons why the '03+ wouldn't straight swap?
Someone has said it's worth going for the '05+ but I thought the major changes were on the '03 revision?

I'm in the middle of re-building a spare engine for my oil burning 96K version.
I've also had the engine changed in my son's 90K mile 2001 version (it failed suddenly) for a low mileage 2003 engine.

The only reason I'm doing a rebuild is because I have my son's old engine and it's more like a hobby as I'm in no a rush unless mine blows up that is.
It's not that cost effective to do and carries the risk that something else now fails or I c**k the rebuild up!

If you can find a low mileage engine irrespective of the year then IMHO it's the most cost effective, quickest and most reliable way to do it.
Any engine should be good for 90K or so if it's looked after so if you do 12K a year and want it keep it 3 years then an enging with < 50K should do the job  s:) :) s:)
I dont think there is any reliable way (without stripping the engine) to check if it has the later pistons etc. but the later (after 2003) the more chance there is.
To be honest, the first engine did 90K miles if the next one does the same I'll be more than happy.

They changed more than just the pistons which is why I was thinking 20-30k '03+ then I don't have to worry about the early 1zz issues.

I'd love to rebuild my own, but I have no where to do so, and another member offered me one for £100, damn it  s:-( :-( s:-(

I was thinking Cam and Unichip, then rebuild one after I move in Feb/March.
My engine has no signs of dying, but it's 96k... and if I spend a grand on Cams and Unichip then rebuild one once I've moved it could end up dying an I've wasted the money for the mapping and cams :-
