In the never ending saga of putting my MR-S back to stock, I've got a Sony single din CD player with removable facia in it... is that the stock one, the aerial stays down when CD is on which I thought only worked with the 'pre-facelift Sony' but I thought they all came with double din as standard?

I'm bascially wondering whether I can swap it over with the fisher price in my facelift MR2 without issue or are the pre/post connectors different? Obviously the MR-S is a Jap import if that makes any difference too. If it's going to be hassle I'll just leave it and buy a new HU, but I like the one that's in the MR-S and I like that the aerial only comes up when the radio is on.

My Jap import came with a stereo made in the Philippines, not a Sony. It is double din with a mini disc and CD player. For it to work in this country it needs a band expander. This changes the frequency that the UK stations are received on the japanese stereo. If your stereo receives the radio stations on the correct frequency it means you have a UK stereo fitted in the car. So it should be a straight forward swap.

The wiring is the same on the UK and import cars.

you will need a toyota to sony lead as teh facelift cars head unit is made to natively accept toyota wiring plugs

That should be in the import model that the stereo is in already as they accept the Toyota plugs, well mine certainly did.

Alright thanks for the help.

Yeah, I did think it didn't sound like the stock one. So basically just take the Sony single HU and the Toyota->Sony plug out of the MR-S (that should hopefully be there already) and put it in the MR2, then the stock facelift unit should just plug straight into the MR-S (well having to change the double din holder over too)?

Got round to taking the single din unit out of the MR-S today... I'm having a bit of a blonde moment, I think I may have put this in when I fitted my boost gauge but that was so long ago I can't remember and it was almost pitch black when I got to this point! Is the red wire the ignition activation one, it's pin 8 on the back of my Sony Unit if that's of any use at all?

Red is power usually permanent and yellow ignition accessory.
Another one won't hurt  .....

Would a pic of the back of the two units help?

In reply to the above, it was the power feed I'd attached to my gauges, won't forget that again  s:) :) s:)

Right... got round to actually swapping the stereos at the weekend.

I can confirm (as read that you can't in previous posts) that you can remove the facelift stereo surround, it has 3 clips down each side but can be done easily without being damaged. I physically had to remove it to get the stereo out as I couldn't get a screw driver in to remove the top 2 screws with it on there (tried with 3 different screw drivers and stopped before I rounded them off!).

So, my single din fitted in the facelift like a dream and once again I can have my aerial down whilst playing CDs which makes me happy  s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:

Fitting the facelift unit to the pre was a bit more of a problem...
There is only 1 wiring loom on the pre-facelft car where there were 4 on the facelift, I'm assuming they're weren't all in use/required (e.g. one for Sat Nav one for something else I don't have) as I've only got 2 plugged in to the single din Sony and all works fine. This will only fit in one place on the facelift stereo but the stereo won't work once it's in.

I've put a red box around the place the pre-facelift connector fits.

Any help please?
Am I going to need an ISO lead of some kind to fit the facelift stereo into the pre-facelift to split the single connector off? Is this MR-S identical to UK pre-facelift? Would I be better off selling the facelift stereo for £80 on eBay and buying a single din converter/2nd hand CD player to sell on the car or just selling it without a stereo and knocking £50 off?

The cables to connect the fisher-price stereo were fitted to ALL Roadsters - they are ususally hidden under the carpet (it has velcro holding it together on top of the tunnel behind the stereo).

If they aren't there, then the previous owner must have butchered the loom.

PS. They dont all need to be connected - some of the sockets are for sat-nav, trip computer & MD changer.

Ah, I haven't gone and put that in the new car too but didn't need to have I? (you can kind of see the wiring in the original picture near top of this thread - looks like the ISO connector Russ has linked). I think I may have transferred two wiring harnesses over when I only needed one and was supposed to leave the other (splits 1 to 2 with brown/black connectors), that sound right?
If you mean that there should be 4 separate ones coming from the main loom then I did look under the velcro carpet but the only 2 that seemed to be there were the 1 for the stereo and the 1 for the cigarette lighter.

May have to get the screwdriver back out then...

Right, final update on this... There is definitely only a single connector coming from the main loom so I've had to rethink things...

I've ended up buying myself a Sony MEX BT3900U and I'll transfer the old Sony back to the old car to sell as I know it works, I'll miss it though because it's quite a nice unit. Will have fitted and removed stereos about 6 times in the last 3 weeks once they're in!

The new unit has the 'AF' button which when turned off is oddly what currently lets my stereo have the aerial down unless the Tuner source is selected so really hoping it will continue to work the same. It has Bluetooth which will come in handy as I lost my headset charger and a USB slot on the front so I also got a 16GB one of these so I can say goodbye to my CD wallet  s:D :D s:D
