Bumping this thread as I think the lack of response is due to it's location   s:D :D s:D

I bought a "Lean Mean Fat Reducing Grilling Machine" to lose weight. I put on five stone. I blame the delicious gravy it makes.

Yes it has been done before, I have one here ready to fit also.
2 ways to do it, stick the key in turn it and then press the button, bit of a cop out.
Use just the button, better

Maybe also be due to spelling?

I think that starting my MR2 is an Event in itself!

How do you get around the immobiliser? Dont you still have to insert the key before pushing the button

That's what I thought which's why a start button just seemed like a stupid idea that would actually take more time rather than saving time.

It would be different if the MR2 had a full keyless entry system like Renault use.
Provided the key is in your pocket (handbag) you can start the engine.

My dad's Avensis estate has a great fully keyless entry and start system on it. Would love one on the 2!!

I have done this in my RX7 but would never install one without still having the key for obvious security reasons, Im sure you would open up a mine field if you did this and your car got pinched!

Just make sure its done safely and a relay is used onto the main power wiring otherwise your button may end up in a moltern mess   s:scared: :scared: s:scared:

No matter what you do you will still need to use the key unless you do away with the steering lock, insurance would love that  s:wink:  s:wink:

I wouldn't mind if the key is still needed. The novelty of a big red START button is all I would want!

My old Mk1 Sprite had a push button start. You still needed to turn the ignition on with a key though.

My dad had a 60's Jaguar Mk11 when I was young and that had a center dash key and start button. I was mesmerised by it and always got my Dad to let me push the button ... I must still be a child at heart as I'm still mesmerised by them   s:( :( s:(

Had PBS in the Mk1 SC:

It was a "proper" setup, in that its function retained all the switching that the key switch did (acc, ign, start).....well, except for the steering lock, that is!   s:roll:  s:roll:

The left switch did accessories: RH one was ignition "on".......button started the car.

When you pressed the start button, it cut the accessories.
There was also a 10 second "window" to start the car after the ignition switch was flipped: this was to prevent the starter motor engaging when the engine was running...

Red LED button illumination "pulsed" during this period, too...  s8) 8) s8)

I have an SLR-style gearknob for my Mk3: still deciding whether its worth fitting....what with the car being for sale, and not REALLY motivated to replicate a "proper" setup for the car, tbh...  s:? :? s:?

It was cool, though........the steering lock CAN be eliminated, too.......  s:wink:  s:wink:

You need fancy electrics to have engine "stop" on the button, too...most (if not all?) Ebay kits just operate the starter moter engagement part of the setup.....

To do things properly, you'd need some sort of logic control: to engage / disengage the steering lock (via a solenoid), to enable a non-locking, push-to-make switch to kill the ignition if it was pushed a 2nd time after starting the car, etc,etc.....

..and I CBA to fab all that .....  s:lol:  s:lol:

Apologies for digging up an old thread; I wondered if a system like this is a step closer to being keyless:  m http://www.advancedkeys.com/Prod_AK104S.html m

Its been used over on Spyderchat; although not 100% its easy to adapt a UK MR2 due to the alarm etc. What is good about it is that you can choose to retain the steering lock if desired.

That looks good but at $249 a push button start with a hidden ignition switch (under dash/glove box/ any nuck or cranny) may be a little harder to fit a lot cheaper.. but with that kit you have to dismantle your key which is going to always be inside your car.. If it were to malfunction they key already there for easy pickings.. Where as with just regular push button keys would be in the house

The Start button in my old S2000 was not a time saving feature, you still needed to put the key in and turn it. It was, however, an event that I loved every time I started the car.

All it does is replace the final click that the key makes........ Oh, and it makes you feel AWESOME! ;-D
