I bought my MR2 with a crappy cassette radio installed. Th previous owner has a good head unit HU which he has taken out a replaced with this one. I have bought myself a replacement now (Sony cdx-gt450u, nothing special but good enough for me) and before I fit it want to know if the MR2 has rear speakers as the current unit only seems to play through the door speakers. Please don't tell me that that is all it has as standard!! I haven't looked at the wiring as yet but I have a toyota MR2 to ISO wiring harness so I am sure that I will find out.

As standard the mr2 only has door speakers (mids and tweeters) its easy enough to add speakers in the rear if you want. Failing that just soundproof the doors and update the speakers to gain a massive improvement over standard.
Another one won't hurt  .....

Op its a 2 seater, it doesn't need rear speakers.  Even if the MR2 had four seats rear speakers just muck up the sound stage, you want good fronts only.
2003 Silver MR2 - Very Very Standard + Leccy Renault Zoe aka the battery mobile.
Ex Blue 04 MR2 - TTE Turbo\'d ~185bhp/200lbs/ft, Sports Clutch, Breast Plate, Lowered & half decent audio
Ex Silver 05 MR2 -  SP turbo conversion 227bhp, 205lbs/ft, with  cobra dual exit exhaust.

Very true, hmmm 5.1 in a roadster.... now that would be a challenge...  Funilly enough though as home when I listen to music on my 5.1 Denon with Q Acoustics speakers I usually turn off the decoding and use straight stereo.  Just sounds better to me.

You are probably right about sticking with the 2 door speakers. I am just so used to having 4 or more speakers in a car that it suprised me initially. My hi-fi system in the house sounds great with 2 speakers. I will let you know what it sounds like with the new head unit when I fit it tomorrow. Thanks for your replies.

Seriously, I must get around (i.e. find time) to upgrade my door speakers when I do my heated mirror conversion.  Been meaning to do this for ages.

Just fitted the Sony HU (Sony cdx-gt450u) and it sounds absolutely great with the mp3 player and even through the radio. A little light on bass compared to parcel shelf speakers but quite a nice overall stereo soundstage. No need for rear speakers  nor an upgrade for me. I will spend save the money for some decent tyres instead.
