Ok i am after a few ideas, I have just ordered a new classic looking double din head unit (includes 3.5mm and usb).  The ideas i am after are for mounting my iphone connecting to the usb.  I really dislike screen mounts and the trailing leads between the phone and head unit.  So any ideas and pics would be appreciated.  Has anybody tackled this and if so i am after all your gen.. Ta in advance.

Take your heater control knobs off remove panel and thread wire through to glove box.
My unit had a front plug which agree is inferior to the rear plug style but by doing above said method, have 1.5" of cable on show MAX.

I intsalled a Kenwood double din just after Christmas. I bought a 120gb ipod from a guy in work for £40 (the largest capacity usable with the unit). The screen didn't work but the head unit has full ipod/iphone control so it wasn't needed. I had the same problem as you, I wanted to mount it but the choices are pretty limited... I'm not a smoker so thought why not convert the ashtray to an ipod dock?

I got my hands on some high density foam (free) from work, a meter of leatherette material from Hobbycraft (literally a couple of quid) and a black ipod USB cable for 99p on ebay...

Here' what I started with...

... cut the foam insert to shape

... Added the leatherette covering

... cut a hole in the base

This is where the effort stopped over a month ago but im going to try to baton mount the cable an Saturday which will, more than likely, require me to partially cut away the plastic base inside the ashtray mount. I'm then going to remove the metal back plate and run the cable behind the console and out behind the stereo fascia trim and into the headunit. So there should only be approx 10mm of cable visible.

Hopefully (!!!) I can get it done saturday and post some images of the finished project over the weekend.

This idea popped into my head only last night.

dont know if its any good but thought i would mention it all the same.  s:wink:  s:wink:

Just love Rinzleristron ashtray holder idea btw. At present I slide my iphone 4 into the ashtray (iphone is in slim protective case) and then just gently close the ashtray draw until tight fit.  s:D :D s:D    s:D :D s:D

Brodit are the best on the market in my view but........once they are in, they are in for good.

There are downsides though in that:

1) They are expensive.
2) You can't swap the ProClip straight into another vehicle as they are car specific.
3) You can't use the active holder when you upgrade your phone as they are phone specific.
4) The ProClip positioning in the MR2 is the worst that I have seen in that it laps over the heater dials which I don't like. I do appreciate that from a using your device for running sat nav etc then its actually great positioning which is what its all about.

Russ, sorry for my opinions here as I suspect you have one installed. Brodit have some great upsides but after 10 years of using them.......I have walked away to nice throw away cheapies that I can stash I'm the glove compartment when not in use.  s:wink:  s:wink:

I maybe missing the point here but, if your stereo controls the ipod/phone, why would you want it on display? Mine stays in the glovebox where it belongs! The only thing that belongs on dashes are gauges or computer controllers like Apexi's.....  s:? :? s:?   Dash Clutter = Major FAIL!

I agree about the whole clutter thing but some head units don't control the iPod/phone beyond start/stop/skip and I don't know about you but it's a massive chore scrolling through albums/artist/songs on my head unit.

Had 3 phones in 5 years of the MR2 and changed the active holder for each one.
Yes expensive
But the best fit for any device in that market.
I will be buying another active holder for the new phone when they release it

When I swapped my HTC HD to an iphone 4, before buying yet another Brodit Active holder, I put one of these on the iphone 4, clicky clicky:  m http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BLACK-SILICON ... 3cc2f9e33e m

It fattened the iphone up enough to allow it to become a perfect fit in the HTC HD Proclip.  s:D :D s:D    s:D :D s:D    s:D :D s:D   I was well happy and did not buy iphone 4 Proclip  s:wink:  s:wink:  had to cut away the Proclip power supply mind you and use iphone white cable, so not perfect ! ! !

Agree, they are best fit for sure, and quality product.

Kudos for your effort, keep up the good ideas  s:D :D s:D

The only question is that if the following is the case ->
Quote from: "Rinzleristron"I bought a 120gb ipod from a guy in work for £40 (the largest capacity usable with the unit). The screen didn't work but the head unit has full ipod/iphone control so it wasn't needed
Then why have it on show for burgalars to pinch?
You'd be gutted to come back to find your softop cut open and the iPod nicked for 40 quid, especially seeing as they'd probably leave the iPod on the seat whne they realise the screen is duff

??? It's a dock, the iPod slides in and out. When I get out of the car I take it with me then close the ash tray. I get back in, I slide it into the dock... Its not permanently attached, the idea was to be able to just pop the IPod in and out when required.
