Had the urge to fit my head unit last night, so armed with a latern and torch and the new head unit in the late evening i completed said task.  thanks to the various posts and guides on this site it made the task an absolute doddle.  Just now need to create some mp3 discs and put a whole load of music onto usb!  Roof down loud music sunny days.... bring it on!!!

I'm actually hankering after a head unit that handles SD cards and gets rid of the now redundant CD/DVD drive.
Bluetooth for a phone would be handy if it's cheap enough, I was looking at the BEAT Audio HU's but don't know if they're actually any good!
Cute & fluffy animals were definitely hurt during the production of this post, there're plenty more where they came from

He also wouldn't put a cheap price on it  s;) ;) s;)  I have heard good things about the headphones though.

I couldn't find a HU with an SD slot at a 'cheap' price so instead I went for one with a USB port and got a 16GB one of these (here is the size compared to normal USB stick - in simple terms it's basically a micro SD card in a USB converter). It turned up yesterday so as of last night it now has 9GB of music on it waiting for me to install the new HU tomorrow, no more CDs for me... I'll install it during daylight hours though  s:lol:  s:lol:

Oh... the BEAT stuff. I looked at a few (BEAT600 I think) last month on some car forums and there was mixed reviews, some had to RMA on arrival for faulty units but some said they were amazing, if you get a non-faulty one they seem to do a lot for the money, I'm not sure how much I would get on with the user interface though doesn't look 'swish'.

Mine is a classic looking clarion for less than £70, mp3/wma usb and 3.5mm aux but no bluetooth.  It does the job sounds good and suits the car.

I've been looking into these in recent times, one thing to watch out for is the machines ability to read the SD card at speed.

I nearly went with a Pioneer a month back but discovered that the unit takes 30 to 60 seconds to go through a 16GB card just to get to the music selected. This would drive me nuts waiting that long for the HU to start playing. Im sure that most wont have this problem but a word of warning all the same.  s:wink:  s:wink:

I may have received poor advice re the Pioneer so would be interested in knowing if its all instant with a 16GB SD card in the way that it would be with an iPod connection.

Hmm looks cheap and nasty, also picked up on

4 x 25W Watts maximum output power
25w PMPO! so about 10w RMS per channel - Fail - Avoid.

I do like the idea of a HU with no CD drive though, double din with a nice big display instead.

Got my new one installed over the weekend  s:) :) s:)

Sony MEX-BT3900U

Also bought some of the Wickes Flashing tape and I've done 1 door. I tested it out adjusting the balance from left to right and I must say the tape makes a massive difference even with the stock speakers!

It was a nice warm day so the plastic came off and stuck back on very easily without a single rip. I used a whole roll of 100mm x 10m just for this door so going back now to get another one! I should've got the 150mm x 10m for £13 instead, didn't realise how much I'd use!

I'm surprised there aren't more USB/Bluetooth/SD only head units. The JVC one I've got is radio/USB/Bluetooth/iPhone and CD.....I've never used the cd player  s:lol:  s:lol:

I bought the Wickes 150mm x 10m flashing. It was enough to do the inside of the door skin and the inside of the door card. I didn't do the door holes I just put the standard polythene back.

I put the polythene back too, the finished product looks like this (took the doorcard back off just to take a picture today)... every hole (other than where the door card clips go in) fully sealed and the polythene is back in place  s:) :) s:)

It is a fine improvement but you went to all that effort and then fell at the last hurdle by putting the stock speakers back in  s:lol:  s:lol:

Still sounds much better, even just the new HU made it sound better, the flashing tape made a massive difference, sounds a lot less tinny. I've got my active sub installed into rear bin, just need to run the wire to the battery and it should sound perfectly fine with that and the stock speakers.

Maybe I'll see how it is and get some stock speakers to gut when d!ck gets back on the site  s:) :) s:)

I bought some Focal 165a1 component speakers, you can get them new for £90ish. IMHO those and flashing the doors negates the need for a sub, in fact I think Stargazer even took his sub back out after replacing the stock door speakers.

Yeah he did. I only paid £70 for the sub so decided to give it a go. May end up that I do the same and should be able to get £70 for it on here or eBay.
