Why are they not fitted flush?

Same thing I was thinking, looks pretty awful, even with those extra side bits to make it look 'better'  s:? :? s:?

...I couldn't see another way of doing it. They do look very strange in isolation but look different when you're sat in the car. You don't really notice as they sit reasonably flush with the heater controls.

I perfer it but found it strange the only mounting screws are a good few inches back from the facia and as you can see from the photos, the supplied surround doesn't quite fit the recess.
