re-programme key fob

Bought a key fob off fleabay + a new fob case and key blank.
Had the key cut, put a new battery in, done the door and the pedal dance.
Immoboliser working ok but the fob will not operate the alarm.
when going through the motions of key in/out, door close/open etc, central locking cylces then i try then key fob and it does not respond to it.
Is the transponder the wrong one or is it faulty?

thanks, it looks like i have a post 2003 fob, black cover over the battery.
forgot shameless is on tonite, looks like i'll be tired at work.
relist and buy another,  unless anyone has got one to do a swap with??
