Hello all,

I've only just got my MR2 and it has a terrible sound system - thanks to Buster's good advice, I'm going to have a crack at installing the ol' Focal 165s [speakers for those of you not in the know], and a decent head unit when I can afford it.

However, I'd love to have some sub-woofer action in my car, without paying the price of losing my precious luggage space! I've heard of under dash subs, but I've never seen how they're installed (or where they're installed), so I'm wondering if anyone has some photos of theirs? Plus will I need an amp to use a sub, if so, where the heck can I put it???

Thanks in advance,

Dan

Dan,

the ud sub fits under the dash above teh accelerator, take a 6.5" JL Sub and sounds great. While I'm sure many would be happy to let you take a look in operson, there is an unwrittenr ule that pics aren't posted in defference to all the ballache Musical Touch went to in designing it.

I can say that there is at most £10 worth of materials used, and it is made from MDF. The cost, not cheap, is for teh intelectual property rather than the actual box itself.

Is there a sufficient gap above the accelerator or do I need to mess around with the footwell? I can't really picture it so sorry to ask so many questions!!!

Welcome Dan.

Its highly unlikely that you'll get find any pictures of an underdash sub here, pictures have remained out of the public domain for 3 years purely because the owners of these things have no wish to do the originator of the UD sub out of business. They spent an awful long time time developing it so it would be considered rude to splash the details of its design across the internet so every Tom, Dick and Harry could make a copy.

Besides, If I showed the pictures here Ed Black would cut my Jacobs off...
  s:shock:  s:shock:
Suffice to say though that it is a fantastic piece of kit, if your every in the East London area I'll be only to happy to show you how good... if you want one, you'll have to order it from the states, and then ask me really nicely how you make it fit Right hand drive cars. I spent about 14 hours upside down in my car working it out...

Of course, if enough people were interested, I could always do another Group Buy...

I didn't realise that an under-dash sub was different to a normal sub apart from its location... I was thinking that you get a normal sub, mount it on something, and then somehow mount that in a convenient place. Obviously I know nothing about these things!

Well, I don't really know where to start. Hmm. Good bass is hard to find these days.

Maybe I'll just bin my engine, fill the back with audio goodies, cut out the floor and drive the car flintstones style!!!

well the concept is simple but the aggro to make it work isn't.

well worth getting one, as long as you don't have big feet  :-) :-) :-)

Mark... do you really think its worth the money. After seeing one all i can think is "they saw you coming a mile off!"... its just a cheap box. Surely the money woudl be better spend getting a decent sub & box for the rear bins... ok, i know it takes up some room but over £100 for just a small cheap box is just silly... IMHO of course!   s:wink:  s:wink:

<edit> AND it doesnt even come with a sub for that matter! </edit>

To be honest with you all, I don't fancy building one of these things myself, and I'm happy to shell out for something that is high quality and fits well... But at present, I have no concept of what one of these things looks like!

Do you know of any websites where I can find one? I've tried googling but with no luck...

I've only just got the amp so can't demo it yet.

however, the driver has a bigger magnet than some 10" I've seen.

in terms of what you get for your money, I can't disagree, however looking at my hourly rate the ballache of re-inventing the wheel in terms of time would have been a lot more.

as for sound, my old rover (don't laugh) had a phoenix gold 10" with a proper box in teh boot, and from memory I don't reckon that had any more oomph than teh UD.

couple that with an amp that goes beneath the bin floors, and you have lost no space.

The bins don't give much space but as an only car I don't think I coudl live with any less space.

when the site is back up you will be able to see teh 8" prototype they did for Ed blacks spyder. This never made production as too many changes were need to make it fit.

they are howver the only company to make a UD sub to fit our car, and teh term UD Sub has become synonymous witjh MUsical Touch.

hopefully teh new site heralds them beginning to enter the 21st century as they are a pain to get hold of via email. That and teh aggro of ruinging teh states was why I never bothered until Grant did teh GB.

Hopefully now he has teh relationship with Steve Texter this will be easier.

they reaklly are your only option.

Thanks for all your comments, everyone. It looks like I'll have to wait until these Musical Touch people get their website in order.

Thanks again.

No room over the passenger side, thast where all the HVAC equipment lives

And regarding big feet, mine are size 12, and they only touch the box when I'm wearing steel toe cap boots...

If you're serious about the sub units, try giving musical touch a ring, the phone number is on the website, and they'll be at woek right now due to the time difference. We're 5 hours ahead. If you order one, get them to send it to me, and I'll modify it to fit your car, and send you a set of instructions to fit it for free.

If you want good audio, without loss of stroage space, its the only way forward. A driver will be about £100, and the box about £170, so its expensive, but for csutom made stuff as unique as this, its quite reasonable.

must be our driving styles then, I dont have any trouble at all, even when heel & toeing. I find it best to turn it down a bit when really pressing on though, as the vibes from the sub tend to transmit into the pedals. LeeUK's got one fitted, and he'll no doubt be able to offer an opinion here.

That's very kind of you. I can't do it right now as I don't have the cash, so if you don't mind I'll contact you when the time comes. I'm not a cheapskate and I will be happy to compensate you for your time.

Thanks again.

Size 11/12, depends on the style of shoe.

It might be something to consider in a few months time, when i've refitted the stereo (it's not stock but the current mounting could be improved or possibly put a new one in), speakers and stopped the doors from rattling.

Hopefully by then i'll have seen a real one at a meet  s:D :D s:D

The other option dan is to go to ur local ICE dealer and have them make a similar version up for u.

Go to a big name installer as they will have a spray glassfiber gun. With this is a case of masking taping spraying covering and thats it!

be a littel more expensive, Look to pay around £650 for Box made with ur choice of sub + amp + h/u (price depending on what spec h/u priced up for a £200 h/u)

and it's all installed and ready to go throw in another £150 and they may fit the fronts too
