Insurance (less of a discussion, more of a rant)

Well..

I'm looking at a 2 this weekend so decided to ring around/go online to get some insurance quotes prior to seeing it and I'm amazed at the prices!

I previously owned a Civic Type-R with an induction kit declared and I was paying about £80 per month. I've since owned my Focus (which is about £50 a month and I haven't shopped around) and thought the MR2 would be coming in somewhere between the two (but closer to the Focus).

Shockingly the average amount I've been quotes are above the old Civic cost!   s:x :x s:x

Bearing in mind, compared to my Honda I'm 5 years older now (31) and have no claims (4 years on record, 5 in March) or convictions, and now live in a much better area I'm so surprised it's that high. Even given the general price increases in the industry I didn't think it would be so much.

I have managed to find one quote that has come in competitive but I'm now worried that it's a red herring and the premium will be increased by random things if I actually try and take it out.

I know there are loads of factors involved but can anyone with a similar profile to mine let me know what sort of premium they're paying for comparison and who with?

I'm just frustrated as I'm on a fairly tight budget and this is making the move over to an MR2 a much more difficult proposition (the missus is already giving me 'the look' about it as we're saving for our wedding  s:scared: :scared: s:scared:  ).

Cheers,
Andy

What insurers are you trying?

I think the first quote I ever got on the 2 (when I was 22) was something like £750 from Admiral with 3 years NCB, I obviously didn't take it out as I ended up getting a highly modified car... I know insurance has gone up but I'm now 26 and only pay £530 with all the mods I have (but have more NCB).

CTR is a higher insurance group (34 vs 27) so it 'should' be cheaper on the '2.

I've got my MR2 on a 'classic' policy which is around £200 pa. I know that's not really a help but when I renewed the cover on my other car and shopped around for quotes they ranged from over £2K to under £600.

The key here is shop around. Try the more specialist insurers that deal with classic and sports cars too, as they also offer standard policies.

I'm current with DirectLine and spoke with them (sort of middle ground quote).

Done a 'Meerkat' and a few have come out in the middle ground but all from the dodgy looking insurers. The well knowns were all coming in £850 plus and several a lot more.

Flux direct came out about £900.

Adrian Flux quote £572 online and then I rang them and they increased the quote to £667 (or about £850 total if I pay monthly).

Bell/Admiral is £750 but only in one lump payment.

Aviva is currently sitting best with a really competitive quote of £492 but as I said above, I'm worried this may not be the final story.

Just doing a Sky quote now.

Sky's online quote just came in pretty good as well but I'll need to call them to make sure it all stacks up (another specialist insurer I tried online quoted me a competitive premium for up to 5000 miles per year, even though I'd said 14000!).

Bloody hate insurance!

What do classic policies include? This is going to be my daily drive/commute car so I'm concerned it might not qualify.

There are 2 other insurance companies on here as well. Try them all.

If you are thinking about modifications best to start with somebody who accepts them, otherwise changing could be costly, or mods have to wait! Many in the meerkats (and similar) lists wont accept them, Certainly not online.

BTW 7500 miles appears to be the break for low mileage, so if you can get down to that it may help.

Had a call from Sky and they seem willk g to do me a good deal. will look at the others too.

The Sky quote included a k&n drop in filter, frustrating as its not really a 'mod' as far as I'm concerned but there you go. Proper mods will be likely at least a year away.

Unfortunately my commute alone will put over 10k on it each year so no way to get it on the low mileage policies  s:( :( s:(

Seems like a bit of light at the end of the tunnel now though.

Cheers.

Don't be suprised if the MR2 insurance is higher than a hot hatch even though its slower.   Its a convertable which loads the premium (easier to break into).  Its mid engined RWD, so more people crash them than your average hot hatch.  Its a new car to you personally, which for any car you buy will load the premium the first year until your used to it.
